WTVC

If I'm reading your edits to WTVC correctly, you sound like you're saying that you're the only one who can edit the station history. This is strictly verboten per Wikipedia policy--please see WP:OWN.

I have worked at the station the past 16 years (and for three years in the early 1970's), and people have been changing the history incorrectly, putting in incorrect, unverifiable facts. I wrote the original history that is there; there is no need to change the history that I have written.. it is correct and is verifiable. My suggestion is for people to leave the history alone, otherwise I am compelled to delete the incorrect information constantly, correcting it to the factual history I originally wrote. I am striving for accuracy, and it is too bad that others just want to leave their mark on something.

The station began operations on August 30, 1949 as WTVN-TV, Columbus' second television station. The station was owned by Picture Waves, Inc., controlled by Toledo attorney and investor Edward Lamb, and was a sister station to WTVN radio. In February 1953, Picture Waves sold the WTVN stations to the Taft Television and Radio Company, which was based in Cincinnati. Taft later purchased an FM station in Columbus, WLWF (96.3 MHz.), from the Crosley Broadcasting Corporation in 1959, renaming it WTVN-FM (it is now WLVQ).

WTVN-TV was an affiliate of the DuMont Television Network at its inception, and was one of only three primary affiliates of that network. In 1953, it took on a secondary affiliation with ABC. Channel 6 became an exclusive ABC station when DuMont closed down operations in 1956. In the early 1970s, Taft's common ownership of WTVN-TV and WKRC-TV in Cincinnati was awarded "grandfather status" by the Federal Communications Commission which, under its newly-enacted "one-to-a-market" rule, prohibited television stations with overlapping signals to share common ownership while protecting existing instances. (One of channel 6's competitors, Crosley/Avco-owned WLWC [channel 4, now WCMH-TV], was also given grandfathered protection through a similar situation.)

Now, your so-called "dispute" contradicts itself immediately:

• 1. If I knew nothing at all about station ownership, as you claim, then I wouldn't have added the second paragraph to the article, right? ([1])
• 2. Where is it implied that WLWF/WTVN-FM wasn't protected by the grandfather clause? The second paragraph talks about "Taft's common ownership of WTVN-TV and WKRC-TV in Cincinnati", and how "One of channel 6's competitors, Crosley/Avco-owned WLWC [channel 4, now WCMH-TV], was also given grandfathered protection through a similar situation". The radio station isn't even mentioned here, nor is it implied to be involved in this scenario. In reality the radio station was protected, once the rules went into effect. And while the grandfathered protection between WLW-C (WCMH-TV) is mentioned, WLW-T and WLW-D (and WLW radio, to stretch it even further) aren't mentioned. They are in the WCMH-TV article, where it is relevant -- not in the WSYX article.

Your last quote from my talk page:

House Mountain - Broadcast History citations

The WBIR/WATE spat over House Mountain is a fascinating story, but when you attribute information to an individual, it really needs a hard citation. If the interview is from a radio or television broadcast, cite the channel, program, and date and time of the broadcast— note this is necessary even if you conducted the interview. If it's from a publication, cite the publication. W for We're

You wrote that the W in broadcasting callsigns was typically used to indicate "We're". While I can imagine that may sometimes be the case, I would caution against applying that to any callsign that begins with W, especially newer stations that may more often simply have randomly assigned callsigns. I'd also not apply it unless it is absolutely verifiable. Take WSM/WSMV, which stood for "We Shield Millions", which was the slogan of their original owner, an insurance company. TV station articles

I'm with you on the it/they issue. I've been going through a lot of TV station articles and seeing a lot of room for improvement. It looks like there are one or two editors who have made very impressive contributions to these articles, but who could use some help in style and formatting matters. In addition to correcting it/they, I have also been on the look-out for the redundancy "$5 million dollars", which I am seeing fairly frequently. This/these editors have also taken a fairly random approach to the capitalization of the sub-headings, ignoring the Wikipedia style of capitalizing only the first word (and, of course, proper nouns). Finally he/she/they seem to be fond of using industry jargon to describe employees -- "personalities" or "talent". I am trying to use more factual and descriptive terms like "staff" and "announcers". Poor Mountain

9 and 35... the first station that comes to mind is KGUN in Tucson. But looking at your edit history, I'm going with WTVC. Am I right?

Some stations moved back, but most did not. WTVC and WDEF did, but WRCB is still on 13, WDSI is still on 40, WTCI is still on 29, WNGH is still on 33, WELF is still on 16, and WFLI is still on 42. In the case of Roanoke, only WSET and WDRL returned to their analog channels. Everyone else stayed put. My data is correct and can be confirmed on my own website (RabbitEars.Info) or if you prefer, by the FCC website in multiple places. In addition, I live in the Roanoke market and own a spectrum analyzer and I can guarantee they're right where I have them listed.

I hope I'm not coming across as mean/rude, as I don't intend to, but I'm short on sleep and short on completed homework assignments, so my apologies in advance if I sound that way. TripEricson (talk) 04:59, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

You're right on WTVC.. WATE-TV and WVLT-TV, Knoxville switched to their digital UHF channels, because their coverage areas actually increased on the digital UHF channel.. I get them in Chattanooga on the hill I live on. I also get WBXX, digital channel 50, too.. WSMV stayed on its digital channel 10 in Nashville, too. For some reason WRCB did not change from digital channel 13 (I believe it was a financial decision), and it did come back to haunt them, as their overall coverage area shrank tremendously, especially in the northern fringes, Bledsoe, Rhea, Meigs, McMinn (folks not on cable or satellite were forced to switch to WBIR-TV for NBC). WBIR is changing to digital channel 10, and also in Chattooga, Gordon, Fannin (actually, they are in the Atlanta DMA anyway, but are closer to Chattanooga--off-air folks there had to switch to WXIA-TV for NBC).

What's helped them (and everybody else) is that cable and satellite companies are mandated to protect stations in the counties in their DMA's.

As long as PSIP converts the UHF digital signal to a virtual channel, which converter boxes, cable and satellite companies read, stations can stay on their UHF channels, but it's more economical to switch back.

Don't worry about the disposition LOL!! That's what I hate about "writing" something. It never conveys the actual emotion and tone of a person's voice. Hope the homework assignments work out. I also used to have a spectrum analyzer, but a friend of mine in Knoxville for it in a television museum he's building. I have a First Phone license, too, and did a transmitter shift at WKPT-TV and WJHL-TV in the Tri-Cities on Holston Mountain back in the 70's (I helped put WKPT-TV on the air). 2. It is fine to upload high-resolution self-made pictures. The servers will reduce the resolution on the page before serving them.
3. Best to quote the full article name and link it - Douglass High School (Kingsport, Tennessee) there are a bunch of Douglas High Schools.
4. If you need to reduce resolution you can open the file in GIMP, select "Image" "Scale image" then choose the size and when scaled "File", "Save as". There are probably specialised programs to so this and GIMP will probably remove EXIF data, but it is what I use.

Source citations, please

Hi. At WBIR-TV, you reverted an edit with the note "WBIR-TV did not have the "Move Closer to your World" music package, WATE-TV did. See Southern Media's List of Station News Themes." I don't doubt that you are correct, but I have concerns about verifiability. Most of the content on station news themes, slogans, etc., is completely unsourced -- that's contrary to Wikipedia policy, because there's no way of telling whether the content is valid. If you have source(s) for the information you have added to this and other articles, please provide reference citations. Sources don't need to be online -- print sources are good, too.

That edit summary suggests that http://www.southernmedia-nmsa.com/ is the source. I was pleased to see an indication that a source exists for that kind of content. Is that a reliable source by Wikipedia standards? Can you add that website to the references for WBIR and other station articles? --Orlady (talk) 22:43, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

Sharp's Ridge tower heights

The article states that the old SpectraSite tower is the highest on the ridge. The FCC's ASR database, however, states that the Richland tower (467m) is the tallest, followed by the Gannett tower (458m), with the SpectraSite tower (443m) third:

Thank you so much for you soultion. So what you are saying is make a link for each name but then wouldn't it be a red link since they have no article. If you could, could you start by returning the 3 lists to Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight and Extra and I will try to work on the TV Stations.
