- Thank you Elysia for the warm welcome and for the resources. I actually have a quick question on sources. As I am contributing to a page about biophysicist Jane S. Richardson, I am hoping to elaborate on some of the work she has done/ published. Can I use and cite her own scientific work using primary sources? Thank you again and I will be sure to ask questions as I think of them!@Elysia (Wiki Ed): --Cation2020 (talk) 22:49, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
- Cation2020, yes, you can cite her own work or other primary sources. However, it is important that the article establishes "notability" as defined by Wikipedia's policies. The most general way to do this is by using multiple sources that are independent of the subject that cover the subject in detail. "Independent" means it cannot be Richardson or her employers talking about her and her work. Wikipedia recognizes that sometimes scientists are not covered in detail even though they may have significant accomplishments, so there is a set of notability criteria that can be applied to scientists/academics.
- Another note: Wikipedia biographies should only refer to the subjects by their surnames or full names, but never first name alone (I see a few instances where Richardson is just listed as "Jane" in your sandbox) :) Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:55, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you for the clarification and note about how to address the subject! I made some edits to either refer to Jane Richardson by her full name or surname. I am also continuing my search for "independent" sources. If I come across a source I am unsure about, I will be sure to ask. --Cation2020 (talk) 04:30, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
