Managing a conflict of interest
editHello, Carey3146. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page Carey Baptist Grammar School, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization, clients, or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam#External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Tacyarg (talk) 21:35, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hi, I'm still concerned that you may have a conflict of interest. Can you confirm or deny this? Thanks. Tacyarg (talk) 21:54, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
- I deny this categorically. I am not related to this person at all. I have just researched this person. Carey3146 (talk) 00:13, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, it's the school I'm referring to - Carey Baptist Grammar School as stated above. Tacyarg (talk) 00:26, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- Again, I have no connection to it. I simply have a name ‘Carey’ because my great grandmother’s maiden name was Carey. Carey3146 (talk) 00:55, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- That's good to know - thanks for confirming. Tacyarg (talk) 22:53, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
- Carey3146 you have stated above that you have "no connection" to the school. Can you please explain how you are accessing primary sources such as the school's calendar, photographs, student handbook etc when you have no connection to it? Melcous (talk) 08:39, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- My uncle was a former Carey student years back. He passes them on around the family whenever something new happens. He receives these 'primary sources' occasionally, including the school calendar. Carey3146 (talk) 09:15, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- I don't even go to a private school in Melbourne. Not sure what the issue is? Carey3146 (talk) 09:16, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- So how do you explain that you referenced some of your additions to https://www.careylink.com.au/ (for example the three sources you added here [1])? This is not a publicly accessible site, and it specifies that "You must be a member of the Carey Baptist Grammar School community and have a User ID and password." Meters (talk) 09:25, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- That’s the story my uncle always tells me. As part of being a former member of the school, my uncle has access to the Old Carey Grammarians Association Portal that is entwined with the main school online portal. Carey3146 (talk) 09:36, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- Are you saying your uncle gave you his login details? The reference Meters noted that you included above says that you accessed the site. Your explanations are stretching credulity. If you do have a connection with the school, you are far better off disclosing it now and working with the conflict of interest guidelines. Failure to disclose can lead to you being blocked from editing. Melcous (talk) 13:08, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, my uncle has given his details over for my research on only a couple of occasions in recent years. If that means I have a somewhat ‘conflict of interest’, then I am happy to abide by those rules in future. I hope this solves the matter and that we can get back onto making the Carey Wikipedia page better and more informative. Thanks. Carey3146 (talk) 19:46, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

about the story of the 1919 "fantom" [sic] but in your edit you provided a private school source that you claimed you had accessed. I find it hard to believe that a source named ""Carey Policy and Guidlines [sic] Directory" is recounting tales about an anonymous student from more than a century ago. So which is it? Are you recounting tales that you uncle told you, and just throwing in an unverifiable source to make it look good, or does the school policy page really contain some hoary quasi-ghost story? If you can provide a screengrab of the policy page that you are referencing that would settle things. Meters (talk) 20:31, 1 February 2023 (UTC)- My uncle and the document also has the history of the school in that document that you are referring to. There is no need to take another picture of it as the information has been deleted from the article of Wikipedia. As a result, I consider this issue closed. - Carey3146, thank you for your explanations - I think it has become clear that you do have a conflict of interest of some kind. As per the guidelines, you are therefore requested not to edit the article directly. You can instead suggest changes on the talk page, most easily use the Edit Request feature, and you should provide a reliable source that is accessible to others when you do so. Thanks Melcous (talk) 22:37, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- Additional note, I would also encourage you to consider what connections you have to other articles you have edited or are considering editing and disclose those. Thank you Melcous (talk) 22:39, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your concerns. Will do. Carey3146 (talk) 23:00, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- Carey3146, you have been requested not to directly edit the article as you have a WP:COI, and you have said "Will do" and then continued to edit. Please stop doing so. Failure to abide by the conflict of guidelines could lead you to be blocked from editing. Melcous (talk) 09:15, 7 February 2023 (UTC)

James Richard May
editHi Carey3146. I noticed that you started the article James Richard May that has been nominated for deletion as it does not demonstrate that he meets WP:BIO. Are you able to find more articles and references to show that he meets that or WP:NACADEMIC criterion 2? The set of awards looks like he possibly does meet that, but the article doesn't make a strong claim for it at present, and I'm having difficulty finding references online in a field I'm not familiar with as my searches are swamped by pages about James May. Cheers, Scott Davis Talk 13:15, 2 January 2023 (UTC)
- I have moved my work from my sandbox to this page. Hope it helps. Thanks. Carey3146 (talk) 13:20, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Centenary Medal
editHello - can you please not add "CM" as a postnominal for recipients of the Centenary Medal (which doesn't entitle a recipient to a postnominal) - "CM" is actually the postnominal for Members of the Order of Canada. Thanks Deus et lex (talk) 01:50, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

No categories on sandbox pages
editAs your sandbox page at User:Carey3146/sandbox/Jim May (chemical engineer) has had to be removed from categories four or five times now because you keep readding it to categories, just a reminder that user sandbox pages are not permitted to be filed in mainspace categories as if they were articles. This is not an optional rule that you're free to ignore or disregard at your leisure; it's a mandatory rule that you must follow, and that you can actually be blocked from editing Wikipedia at all on grounds of disruption if you persist in editwarring over. So just a friendly warning that the sandbox version of the page must stay out of article categories, and you may be cruising toward serious consequences if it gets returned to article categories again. editPlease stop adding links to "prabook"; this is a site that steals content from other sources (including wikipedia at times) and fails to attribute. We cannot link to junk like this, and we cannot link to copyright violations. Additionally, it's open editing, meaning any one at any time can change it. Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, please note that there is a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Deviating from this style, as you did in Jim May (chemical engineer), disturbs uniformity among articles and may cause readability or accessibility problems. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Please also not that citations should provide a link to content that actually verifies the information in the article, not to a generic home page or search. link which you added to the article multiple times does not provide any verification of anything about May at all. Please do not remove maintenance templates from pages on Wikipedia, as you did to Carey Baptist Grammar School, without resolving the problem that the template refers to, or giving a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. Please stop. If you continue to remove maintenance templates without resolving the problem that the template refers to, as you did at Carey Baptist Grammar School, you may be blocked from editing. Stop doing this. The cited source does not support most of the claims in that paragraph. The only claim it supports is that the school was founded on 13 February 1923. File copyright problem with File:Alan Jackson in 1996.jpg

Alan Jackson occupation
editHello @Carey3146. I noticed that you reverted back to listing multiple occupations for Alan Jackson (businessman) in the |occupation=
parameter of {{Infobox person}}.
Per {{infobox person}}, |occupation=
is for "Occupation(s) as given in the lead.
". Note that a title or a position is not an occupation. I think the lead accurately captures that he was a "businessman
", although I would be open to changing that to "business executive
" or even "corporate executive
". While it is tempting to want to add more in the lead or in |occupation=
we need to be mindful of MOS:ROLEBIO, which states:
Avoid overloading the lead paragraph with various and sundry roles
Remember, too, that MOS:INFOBOXPURPOSE says to "summarize key facts
" and:
The less information it contains, the more effectively it serves that purpose, allowing readers to identify key facts at a glance.
I do not think adding "accountant", "director", and "land developer" warrant a place of prominence in the infobox.
But I am open to hearing good-faith arguments based in Wikipedia guidelines for including them. What do you think? — Archer1234 (t·c) 12:32, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
- Ok, I understand. Is it possible to have ‘business executive and director’? Carey3146 (talk) 21:31, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
- I think "business executive" encompasses his being a director, chairman, managing director, CEO, etc. I think a reader of the article is not going to be so much more well-informed of key facts about him with the addition of "director" in the infobox. I would be in favor of changing the {{short description}}, the lead, and
|occupation=
infobox parameter so that all of them call him a "business executive". If we change one of those, we should change all of them, although I do recognize that the disambiguation for the article title says "(businessman)", but that shouldn't dissuade us from making appropriate changes within the article. We can revisit the name of the article after settling on this issue. - Note that in addition to using
|occupation=
there is an option to use either|title=
or|office=
(but not both) to list notable positions or titles he has held. Again, we should take our cue from what is summarized in the lead and not use either of those parameters to list various and sundry positions. - By the way, it is considered bad form to edit an article to make changes to elements that are under active debate and discussion. That will often be interpreted as edit-warring, which is not constructive. Better to leave it as it is and when consensus is reached or the dispute resolved, then the article can be updated if necessary to reflect that. — Archer1234 (t·c) 23:16, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
- Business executive and director are two different things. I.e. the difference between ceo and chairman of a company. Can we keep it to how I have edited to be? Thanks. Carey3146 (talk) 23:26, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
- While I appreciate the distinction you are making, I am not (yet) persuaded that the distinction is significant enough to warrant including "director" in addition to "business executive". But I am open to further discussion on it. Let's take the discussion to Talk:Alan Jackson (businessman) and seek inputs from other editors. If the consensus there is to include "director" then that's what the article should show. — Archer1234 (t·c) 23:58, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
- I do have a follow-up question. The nature and substance of your edits lead me to wonder if you might have a personal or professional relationship with Mr. Jackson or to someone else who does. Could you clarify if you have any personal (or professional) relationship/interest in Mr. Jackson and, if you do, the nature of that relationship/interest? Note well, I am not asking that you "out" yourself. But a general description of any relationship that does not compromise your identity should be sufficient. — Archer1234 (t·c) 00:20, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
- In response to your question, I have no relations nor connections with this man. For context, I am interested in business history. When I was scrolling the internment and found Alan Jackson (the musician) I also found under that article about some businessman. This intrigued me and so, I heavily researched. This is why I am heavily invested in this article because I created and researched the person thoroughly. Thanks Carey3146 (talk) 05:39, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
- I have opened a discussion at Talk:Alan_Jackson_(businessman)#Occupation and invite you to share your thoughts there. — Archer1234 (t·c) 01:38, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
- I have changed my view, I am happy with this discussion and your view that director and business executive are one and the same. Lest change it to business xecruve under occupation and keep (and even grow the title page. However, is it possible to change the name ‘title’ to ‘office’ instead? Thanks Carey3146 (talk) 05:42, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

editYou seem to have added a link to the honorific "Sir" in several articles, which have a specific edit comment advising not to. If you are going to add the link (and I'm not suggesting that you should), contrary to the existing comment, than you should probably delete the comment - otherwise the resultant source text (as seen by an editor) makes no sense. edit Hello, I'm Timtrent. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, Jim May (chemical engineer), but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page.
Your use of references in this article has been disingenuous. Items fail verification. References are Primary Sources, or lack significant coverage in independent reliable sources. This must cease. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 22:12, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
- This behaviour is further disappointing since you have been warned about it peviously and received a block for your disruptive editing. Continue down this path and your blocks will increase in their length until an administrator loses patience with you and blocks you indefinitely. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 22:17, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
Introduction to contentious topics
editYou have recently edited a page related to articles about living or recently deceased people, and edits relating to the subject (living or recently deceased) of such biographical articles, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

edit Please do not remove maintenance templates from pages on Wikipedia, as you did to Jim May (chemical engineer), without resolving the problem that the template refers to, or giving a valid reason for the removal in the edit summary. Your removal of this template does not appear constructive, and has been reverted. Thank you.
Your supposed reason was not acceptable, and was disingenuous. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 07:34, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
- I understand that some of the issues in the maintenance templates should still be there, due to an ongoing issue regarding some of them. However, the issue concerning the notability of the article, is something I find irrelevant to even be there, due to the discussion in January this year, that declared that the article was notable enough to keep. Since then, further references have been added. Thus, I believe it right to remove that notability issue on the maintenance tab. What is your perspective? Carey3146 (talk) 09:05, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
- Discussions on Notability may be held at any time, as you see below this section. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 13:28, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

Conflict of interest
editCarey3146, it does not appear that you have been specifically asked this question, so can you please respond as to whether you have a connection and therefore WP:COI with Jim May? I note in particular that you have uploaded the photo in the infobox of the article as your own work. Is this accurate? Thank you, Melcous (talk) 15:17, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
- Carey3146 can you please answer this question before continuing to edit the article? Melcous (talk) 07:54, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
Alan Jackson is due for scrutiny
editPlease read WP:OWN, which you have not quite exhibited so far. A matter of some concern with this article and with Jim May is the sheer quantity of both edits and marginal (often less than marginal) references you have added to the article(s). Without this attention from you neither article would have drawn the attention of detail oriented editors.
I feel it to be unlikely that Jackson will be brought to the wider attention of the community at AfD, but cannot rule it out. At present I see some sort of notability. The article, however, requires the cutting of any "fact" unable to be verified. WP:V is one of the major tenets of Wikipedia, and is not optional. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 16:53, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
- That is fine to edit the Jackson article if you see fit. However, I believe there will be quite a few indecent references, with few info being not referenced properly. I think the question of notability is beyond even questioning for this article. The reason why I edited these two articles was not my connections, as I have none, but because I have heavily researched them, both on line and in person. This is why I have edited a lot. There is no current nor past conflict of interest with either of these articles. Carey3146 (talk) 20:05, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
- Assuredly it is fine to edit Jackson, but not as "I" see fit. It is fine to edit it within the policies and rules here.
- You said
I believe there will be quite a few indecent references, with few info being not referenced properly
. Did you not put these unreferenced facts and "indecent"references in? - It would be much appreciated if you would correct your early and overenthusiastic errors, now that you are the more familiar with Wikipedia. It will enhance your personal reputation and save a load of work for others. Please get to work. I've flagged a good few for you.
- I am not interested in your 'connections'. There is a question just above that deserves a direct answer, please. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 21:10, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
- No sorry, I didn’t mean indecent I meant independent. That was a typo. Pardon that. Carey3146 (talk) 04:26, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
- Even so, please start the remedial work. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 07:01, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
- Please note that ANY press release is a Primary Source, wherever it is published. So are self created death notices. I have reverted your removal of the tags. You are aware of this. You have been told this before, albeit about a different article. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 07:05, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
- I completely agree with press releases, yet the references that I am questioning is the Plastic News and the Canberra Times sources. These are not press releases, rather articles in response to events that occurred. Carey3146 (talk) 07:11, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
- They look like press releases, they sound like press releases, and pass the duck test for being press releases (or interviews). There is an obvious format for a press release, even under a staff member's by-line. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 07:18, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
- Firstly, The Canberra Times reference here: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/133928936, is a newspaper article, not a press release.
- Secondly, The Plastic News reference here: https://www.plasticsnews.com/article/19981116/NEWS/311169984/australian-ceo-returns-to-roots-with-nylex-buy, looks like a news report as described underneath the title.
- So, I don't believe either of them are press releases from Jackson or his organisations he worked for as both are independent. Carey3146 (talk) 07:28, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
- They are both PR material. You obviously have no experience of issuing press releases. They are issued to journalists who then make of them what they will. The fact that someone has tarted it up a bit is broadly irrelevant.
- Where it is an interview, those are the words of the subject, thus they are a primary source.
- You are aware of WP:BRD we are at the D part 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 09:28, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
- I do agree that journalists do write articles based on press releases or other pieces of info that they come across through various avenues. However, what I do question is these two specific articles only in passing cite or mention a press release. They are simply commenting or providing information on the recent events of what the company is doing or issues. Those articles are not commenting on the individual press releases but the events surrounding it. I believe to say that these sources are not independent and thereby requires non-primary sources is false. Carey3146 (talk) 09:42, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
- TO avoid playing a game of ping pong, why not simply remove the text these purport to cite.
- These are PR based, and must be discounted. Find better references by all means, just not these.
- Your absolute insistence on being correct starts to cross the threshold into WP:OWN. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 14:13, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
- While I personally disagree, I am happy to agree to disagree and just leave the two references as they are currently, in order for others to review and edit. Thanks. Carey3146 (talk) 20:05, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
- Since we disagree, and are likely to continue to do so, I have already asked for other impartial eyes on both these key articles. These eyes will be those of experienced editors, experienced in examining articles. I will defer to their opinions, and will hold back from further action.
- I have no wish to make life here unpleasant for anyone. I have a passionate love for Wikipedia, and an honest belief that I am correct. You have an honest belief that you are correct. The pair of us cannot resolve this without assistance, since one or the other of us must yield to the other, something I view as unlikely.
- Please continue to enhance both articles, examining the references you choose and have chosen as dispassionately as you are able. WP:42 is a decent guide. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 20:15, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

Notice of Conflict of interest noticeboard discussion
editThere is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest/Noticeboard regarding a possible conflict of interest incident with which you may be involved. Thank you. Melcous (talk) 22:41, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Carey3146: This edit is quite revealing. I have added Conflict of Interest templates to the articles on both grandfathers, and I strongly suggest you come clean and disclose all the articles you have connections to and cease directly editing them if you do not want to be blocked from editing altogether. Melcous (talk) 22:48, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
I have just made a formal proposal at the current foot of this topic. I am leaving this message on all this discussion's participants' talk pages to draw attention to the proposal. Your opinion, whatever it may be, is welcome at that proposal 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 07:53, 9 October 2023 (UTC)

Australian English
editHello,
Thank you so much for your edit on Australian National University.
I don't believe that the period after titles are used in Australian English so I have partially reverted it in good faith.
Kind regards,
The Education Auditor (talk) 09:35, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi,
- I understand where you’re coming from there, and I too am confused on where Australian English stands on this matter. However, according to what I found on Google, it says:
- “In Australian English (and British English generally), a full stop is used after an abbreviation when the final letter of the abbreviation is not the final letter of the abbreviated word when it is spelt out: Prof. – f is not the last letter of Professor. Rev. Etc”
- Therefore, I think your edit probably needs to be reverted in light of this information.
- Thank you for raising this concern.
- Sincerely, Carey3146 (talk) 10:06, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hello again :-)
- Please refer to the Australian Government Style Manual on the following pages:
- Full stops
- Abbreviations
- Titles, honours, forms of address
- Australian National University also has multiple webpages referring to the Chancellor as The Hon Julie Bishop and not The Hon. Julie Bishop. While I prefer a good old period after an abbreviated title, my personal opinion doesn't matter.
- Feel free to let me know if you have any further objections.
- Kind regards,
The Education Auditor (talk) 10:28, 10 January 2024 (UTC)- Ok, that makes sense then. I respect the edit you made now.
- Thank you for your edit. Carey3146 (talk) 10:51, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
