Small Potatoes (grammar) reply
editHey Bjhodge8, sorry for the late reply. It looks like the matter which you brought up has been addressed, so well done for that. With regards to your talkpage post, Checkingfax responded to the way you presented and formatted your post. As you say in the post itself, it was an "overly prolix diatribe". Overly prolix diatribes are, of course, not the best way to get across a point or make a suggestion. Your odd and inconsistent spacing before and after punctuation marks was also unhelpful in getting your message across. It's important to remember that while the talkpages are far more casual than articles, they still benefit from clean and clear communication, especially as like the articles they will be read by editors from different backgrounds and different forms of English. You are correct not to edit revert, but you are incorrect that one occasion like that should put you off making changes yourself, as noted by Corinne. At any rate, your talkpage post did in the end lead to the problem being solved, so the process does work. Best of luck in your future edits, CMD (talk) 15:34, 18 February 2016 (UTC)

formatting edits

You didn't ask a specific question, but I assume you are interested in formatting citations. My advice is to take a look at WP:Referencing for beginners; the videos at that page explain how to easily create nicely-formatted footnotes without having to bother with the code of citation templates such as Template:Cite book or Template:Cite web. Of course you can also take a look at the template pages themselves for the documentation. For a quick overview of more general formatting, try the WP:Cheatsheet. Cybele
editI hope I didn't come over as defensive on the talk-page; but I probably was, and that's a little embarrassing. Your argument and presentation were sound. Regards, Haploidavey (talk) 16:40, 4 November 2016 (UTC)

Given the span of time evinced in many Talk Pages(up to 15 yrs. in some cases), would you, in your own professional/personal editorial capacity, respond to surprisingly aged comment entries? If not, why, and, what would be a sensible cut-off point within a WP context?Bjhodge8 (talk) 20:17, 27 July 2017 (UTC)
- That depends on context. Is the issue still current, or has the article changed in the meantime? Do you think something needs to be done or have even done something related to the old comment? Have there been subsequent discussions?
- I would generally not respond to discussions that have been stale for more than a month unless I'm doing something on that issue that's worth commenting on - then I might just as well add to an old section on the talk page instead of creating a new one, provided there aren't many other threads posted afterwards - if the section I'd be adding something to is too far removed from "current", other editors are much more likely to simply miss my comments, and starting a new thread may be more appropriate than resurrecting an old one. - @Huon: Thanks for the help. I'll try to suss it out as you suggest. I do formal clean-up and random cite.tag work and, as such, regularly encounter long abandoned(years not months) articles and accompanying talk pages. It takes a good while to realize the utter vastness in virtual space and time of WP, and what it has become.Bjhodge8 (talk) 02:30, 28 July 2017 (UTC)
