AfC notification: Draft:1981 Iran massacre has a new comment
edit- Dear Buidhe,
- Thanks for your comment!
- The exact number of dissidents executed or killed during the 1981 Massacre and 1988 massacres are still not known. Yet, based on the available data, the 1981 Massacre could be regarded as "the most extensive" mass killings after the Iranian revolution for three reasons:
- - It was more extensive in terms of groups targeted: During the 1981 massacre, most opposition groups (from left to right) as well as religious and ethnic minorities were targeted. During the 1988 massacre, only Mujahedin-e Khalq and other leftist group were targeted.
- - It was more extensive in terms of timespan: the 1981 massacre took place between 20 June 1981to March 1982 (more than nine months). The 1988 massacre took place from early July 1988 to early September 1988 (less than three months).
- - Based on reliable documented data and published lists of the victims, the number of victims of the 1981 Massacre were, at least, twice as much as the reported executions during1988 massacre.
- Please have a look at this academic paper (published in the Journal of Genocide Research), which discusses both massacres based on solid scientific documentation work. It also discusses the limitations of existing literature on the topic.

- This finding has also been confirmed by the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran.

- Both sources are referenced in the entry!

The sources include a recent UN-report (2024), academic journal papers, scholarly monographs, and academic databases. All sources are mentioned in the submission. Therefore, I wonder how this issue could be resolved.
