Wikipedia and copyright
editHello Apostolicus, and welcome to Wikipedia. Your additions to Giovanni Bernardo Gremoli have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.
- You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
- Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
- Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
- If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
- In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are PD or compatibly licensed) it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, the help desk or the Teahouse before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
- Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.
It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 14:42, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

Irzio Luigi Magliacani moved to draftspace
editAn article you recently created, Irzio Luigi Magliacani, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Links to draft articles
editPlease do not introduce links in actual articles to draft articles, as you did to Apostolic Vicariate of Southern Arabia. Since a draft is not yet ready for the main article space, it is not in shape for ordinary readers, and links from articles should not go to a draft. Such links are contrary to the Manual of Style. These links have been removed. Thank you. - Arjayay (talk) 11:32, 5 April 2021 (UTC)

Mirrors
edit Thanks for contributing to the article Raffaele Filippo Presutti. However, one of Wikipedia's core policies is that material must be verifiable and attributed to reliable sources. You have recently used citations which copied, or mirrored, material from Wikipedia. This leads to a circular reference and is not acceptable. Most mirrors are clearly labeled as such, but some are in violation of our license and do not provide the correct attribution. Please help by adding alternate sources to the article you edited! If you need any help or clarification, you can look at Help:Contents/Editing Wikipedia or ask at Wikipedia:New contributors' help page, or just ask me. Thank you. February 2023
editHi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give a page a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Ubaldo Teofano Stella. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.
In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. Liz Read! Speedy deletion nomination of Higher Committee of Human Fraternity
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Higher Committee of Human Fraternity requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.forhumanfraternity.org/zayed-award-for-human-fraternity/ and https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/44524/what-is-the-higher-committee-of-human-fraternity. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Onel5969 TT me 14:32, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
- I am concerned that not only did you create this copyright infringement, when it was brought to your attention you stated it wasn't a copyright violation. Draftification
editHi please slow down your draftifying. There is no need to push articles to draft shortly after they are created. You can tag them as needing more sources and come back after a week or so to draftify if there’s no improvement. Thanks Mccapra (talk) 17:53, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
- Okay - Apostolicus (talk) 17:54, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
- I came here to say the same thing. You draftified 23 articles today! That's excessive. Moving main space article to Draft space is just one tool that is possible to use, it's not the only tool that you should use when you see an article that needs to be improved. Also, you focused much of your efforts on the work of one editor and that could be seen as harassment. Please edit thoughtfully and don't mass-edit with any type of editing. Thank you. Liz Read! Unblock request - April 2024
editApostolicus (block log • active blocks • global blocks • contribs • deleted contribs • filter log • creation log • change block settings • unblock • checkuser (log))
Request reason:
Following my previous request, I diligently reviewed multiple Wikipedia articles to help further my understanding of copyright issues. Here are the results of my review:
1. What is copyright?
Copyright is a type of law that protects original creations and gives the creator exclusive rights to use and share them for a specific period. It aims to help creators earn money from their creations. Copyright laws differ by country but typically apply to literature, music, drama, art, and other forms of creative work.
2. How is Wikipedia licenced?
The information on Wikipedia is available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License (CC BY-SA) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). This means that people can use and edit the text as long as they offer the same freedoms to others and give credit to the original authors of the Wikipedia article.
3. Why is copyrighted content not allowed on Wikipedia?
Wikipedia follows U.S. copyright laws as its servers are based in the United States. It is unable to host any material that violates these laws, ensuring that its content can be freely distributed and edited. The website aims to offer reliable information that is available for sharing and usage.
When I posted pictures on Flickr and later moved them to Wikipedia, I not only violated copyright laws but also falsely changed the images' licensing and included them in Wikipedia articles unlawfully. This misled others to believe the images could be freely distributed when they were not actually authorized to be.
4. Under what circumstances can we use copyrighted content?
Certain content that is protected by copyright laws may be utilized under the "fair use" doctrine, allowing for restricted use of copyrighted material without obtaining permission for specific purposes like commentary, criticism, news reporting, teaching, and research. Various factors influence fair use, including the intent and nature of the usage, the type of copyrighted material, the proportion utilized compared to the entirety, and the impact on the market or value of the copyrighted work. Wikipedia may also permit fair use for educational and transformative objectives within its articles.
5. How do you intend to avoid violating the copyright policy in the future?
In order to comply with Wikipedia's copyright policy, it is important to:
- Understand and adhere to copyright laws, including those that apply outside the U.S.
- Use content that is either in the public domain or licensed for free use and redistribution, such as CC BY-SA.
- Include information when uploading images, including copyright tags, a description, source, and author details to ensure proper permissions for use on Wikipedia.
- Avoid using copyrighted content that doesn't meet Wikipedia's fair use guidelines or lacks a clear license for redistribution and modification.
I hope my explanation of Wikipedia's copyright policy was clear and has shown my readiness to return to contributing constructively to the platform. I have learned a lot by re-reviewing these policies, and I am eager to apply this knowledge to enhance my future work. My aim is to ensure that my contributions not only enrich the resource but also strictly adhere to the necessary legal and ethical standards. I am sincerely looking forward to being part of the Wikipedia community again, helping to share accurate and valuable information with the world.
