Hey Absecon, just wanted to let you know you're doing a kick-ass job. Keep up the good work. DanKeshet

Er, these "X v. Y" articles don't contain any information (except for the judge, sometimes). I hope you'll fill them up with some data? Otherwise, they're pretty useless... --Magnus Manske 19:17 Jan 14, 2003 (UTC)

Greetings! Long time not getting around to talking... Sorry about not filling up the pages on Supreme Court Cases so fast... will do soon. Thanks for the support, guys... I'll be hanging around. I fill them in once I get some information on them, and it's a piecemeal job while I myself learn about the cases. The fact is, there just isn't much anyone's doing on the Supreme Court Cases themselves, and the area needs some bolstering. So I figured I'd kick in whatever I can. --Absecon 59

Can I ask you to rethink your year in sports pages. The use of the word sports like this is never used in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and much of the English speaking word. It's an American thing. We talk about sport rather than sports. Mintguy

Hello. I made a minor change on Brown v. Board of Education, where it was in my view innacurate. I discussed the point on the talk page. As you are the main author of the page, I leave a message so that you may check. Could you please tell me whether I am right? Feel free to write in english here (my talk page on fr wikipedia)

Article Licensing

edit

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Images

edit

Hi Absecon. I notice you've uploaded a bunch of images. Thanks! You need to provide more information about them, though. For example, you need to indicate where you got each image (if you made it yourself, say how! Scanner? Or what type of camera?). Also, you need to add a copyright tag (GFDL-self for images you made). Please drop a note at my talk page if you have any questions. dbenbenn | talk 20:28, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for adding the GFDL information to the above images. Would it be possible for you to use the tags listed at Wikipedia:Copyright tags, as I have now done on the upload page. Pages which do not employ one of these specific tags get included in a project tpo tag untagged images ... writing out the GFDL in full, as you did, would mean that your image gets caught up in that project, leading to unnecessary additional work. Check out the implementation of the tag in the text of the page by looking at it in edit mode, should you be uncertain how it all works. Thanks --Tagishsimon (talk)

Image deletion

edit

The images I listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion are not used on the New Orleans Mint Page. The same images with different file names are on the Mint page. Check closely. You have uploaded duplicate images with different file names.

Some of the pictures used on the Mint page still have no source. Please correct this or they may be deleted in the future. Always tag images when you upload them. Thanks. Nv8200p 16:40, 4 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:MississippiStateCapitol.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images on Wikipedia is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: TemplateName.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. For your fair use rationale, you wrote, "as a work of art, it is available for fair use under the accompanying license", but that only applies in articles that actually discusses the article itself, not the way you're using the image in Jackson, Mississippi. And there is nothing to indicate that the copyright owner has given permission for use (there's probably a copyright notice on the back of the postcard). Ytny 22:55, 14 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Also, on Image:MississippiStateCapitol.jpg, you do not own the copyright to a postcard. It belongs to the publisher or the photographer of the postcard and fair use applies only when discussing the postcard itself, not what's pictured on the postcard. Cheers. Ytny 23:08, 14 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Category:People with handlebar moustaches

edit

Isn't rather trivial and unencyclopedic? I am minded to put it up if WP:CFD, but thought that I should first ask whether you might have an explanation of why you think it's worth including. --BrownHairedGirl 14:58, 30 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Many people are identifiable by their distinctive facial features, including handlebar moustaches, in much the same way that people are identified by the fact that they are from, for example, a particular U.S. State. I mean, the fact that Rollie Fingers has a handlebar moustache is, in my opinion, no less important than listing the fact that he's in the category for Major league baseball players from Ohio. We can say in both instances "who cares?" but, this being an encyclopedia, I think part of the point of creating such categories is to identify the similarities people/things share with others. Absecon 59 04:02, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I will admit, it does seem rather trivial, but I love it, i say keep it, and create more on different types of moustaches maybe, i'd like to see a list of people with a Fu Manchu. or maybe even do one on mullets, I would like to find out how many famous people actually have mullets.

Keep up the good work --Jadger 23:01, 4 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for Image:2ndBankofUSSouthFacade.JPG

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:2ndBankofUSSouthFacade.JPG. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 03:04, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:1933 SASK LP.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 03:08, 8 January 2007 (UTC).

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Emory.jpeg)

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Emory.jpeg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Historical North Carolina license plates

A "prod" template has been added to the article Historical North Carolina license plates, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the dated prod notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. License tagging for Image:PennText6.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:PennText6.jpg.

Fair use rationale for Image:PaulSimon-Front.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:PaulSimon-Front.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:1898-O SD.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:1898-O SD.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:PaulSimon-Front.jpg

edit

Thank you for uploading Image:PaulSimon-Front.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. Meridian, Mississippi

edit

Hi Absecon. I'm not sure if you're still active, but I have a question. I've been working on the Meridian, Mississippi article for the past year or so, and I'm working towards getting it to FA status. This was ages ago (nearly 4 years), but you added some information about Media and Publishing in this edit, and I was wondering if by some amazingly awesome memory you remembered where you got it from? I live in Meridian, and the only newspaper I know of is the Meridian Star. I've never heard of ANY of the others that you added (which btw have stayed there ever since). Also, I was wondering if maybe you knew of a source that I could get information like this from. This section is the only one left that I have yet to expand, so it would be of great help if you could contribute! Thanks for your time! --Dudemanfellabra (talk) 02:00, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wow.. Duh haha. I've looked all over that site for a lot of information, but I didn't even think to look there for media information. The city's website only lists the Meridian Star and the East MS Business Journal, but I tried calling the EMBJ, and their phone number is not in operation. Also, their website is no longer active, so I think the journal is out of business. Also, there are several other errors on the city website such as listing the radio stations affiliated with "The Radio People" under the wrong section, so I'm not sure how recent the information is. Thanks for the suggestion, though! --Dudemanfellabra (talk) 04:15, 19 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

edit

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Karanacs (talk) 17:08, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

File permission problem with File:I Am A Rock 45.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:I Am A Rock 45.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

 • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
 • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add OTRS pending to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Proposed deletion of List of coinage produced by the New Orleans Mint

edit

The article List of coinage produced by the New Orleans Mint has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

How is this a notable subject for a stand alone list?

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

edit

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:58, 6 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:WikiProject United States/The 50,000 Challenge

You are invited to participate in the 50,000 Challenge, aiming for 50,000 article improvements and creations for articles relating to the United States. This effort began on November 1, 2016 and to reach our goal, we will need editors like you to participate, expand, and create. See more here!

Richard Montfort moved to draftspace

edit

An article you recently created, Richard Montfort, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Proposed deletion of File:PennText.jpg

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Speedy deletion nomination of Jan Springer

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Jan Springer, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which pages can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. --Nahal(T) 11:42, 14 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Though I am not the admin who deleted this, I apologize on behalf of WP for this deletion, and I am glad that you persisted. to avoid this sort of erroneous deletion of an incomplete article , the best course is to add a tag reading underconstruction to the top of an article.
