Charles Du Bos (18821939), French critic of French and English literature whose writings on William Shakespeare, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Lord Byron helped turn French attention toward English literature.

Cited as the source of the quotations, "Joy is but the sign that creative emotion is fulfilling its purpose," and, "The important thing is this: to be able at any moment to sacrifice what we are for what we could become."

Not to be confused with Charles Frédéric Dubois (28 May 180412 November 1867), the Belgian naturalist, sometimes cited as the source of the second quotation above.
