The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is an American media franchise and shared fictional universe that is the setting of superhero films independently produced by Warner Bros., based on characters that appear in DC Comics publications.

As the franchise is composed of films adapted from a variety of DC Comics properties, there are multiple lead actors. Henry Cavill stars as Kal-El / Clark Kent / Superman in the films Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), while Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot portray Bruce Wayne / Batman and Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, respectively, in the latter film, along with Ezra Miller as Barry Allen / The Flash, Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry / Aquaman, and Ray Fisher as Victor Stone / Cyborg. Affleck and Miller reprise their roles in Suicide Squad (2016), while Gadot reprises her role in Wonder Woman (2017), Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), and will do so again in an untitled third film. All six actors reprise their roles in Justice League (2017), as well as in its 2021 director's cut. Momoa stars in Aquaman (2018) and in its sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023),[20] while Miller will star in The Flash (2023), with Affleck reprising his role as Wayne in both The Flash and The Lost Kingdom.

Margot Robbie portrays Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad and reprises her role in Birds of Prey (2020) and The Suicide Squad (2021). Zachary Levi portrays the eponymous protagonist in Shazam! (2019), with Asher Angel playing the character's alter-ego Billy Batson; both will return in Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023).[20]

John Cena stars as Christopher Smith / Peacemaker in the television series Peacemaker (2022), after also appearing in The Suicide Squad, while Dwayne Johnson will star as Teth-Adam / Black Adam in Black Adam (2022) and Xolo Maridueña will headline Blue Beetle (2023) as Jaime Reyes / Blue Beetle. Set to star in HBO Max original DCEU films is Jurnee Smollett as Dinah Lance / Black Canary in her own solo film, reprising her role from Birds of Prey. Additionally, Viola Davis will reprise her role as Amanda Waller from both Suicide Squad films as the lead in a new series confirmed to be in development. Leslie Grace was set to star as Barbara Gordon / Batgirl in Batgirl (2022) which is now confirmed to have been cancelled.[21]

Other prominent cast members who appear in the films and/or series within the franchise include Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Willem Dafoe, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Amber Heard, Jeremy Irons, Joel Kinnaman, Diane Lane, Harry Lennix, Jared Leto, Ewan McGregor, Joe Morton, Connie Nielsen, Chris Pine, Michael Shannon, Kristen Wiig, Patrick Wilson, and Robin Wright.

Cut characters

edit

Several well-known characters from DC publications were selected to be featured in various films of the franchise but were not included in them due to diverse circumstances or creative choices made during production. Actors to portray them were cast and in all cases except one, footage was shot and scenes composited and completed but were ultimately left out of the films. One of these characters was to headline her own film which completed principal photography but was cancelled during post production. Although these characters weren't featured in their respective movies, the possibility of their return in a future film remains.

Barbara Gordon

edit

Barbara Gordon (portrayed by Leslie Grace) is a member of Gotham City's Police Department and the daughter of Commisioner James Gordon. She was to be featured in her own solo film, which would show her initially as a police officer and later operating as the vigilante Batgirl to solve a crime wave related to Garfield Lynn's illegal operations as Firefly. She was confirmed to interact with Michael Keaton's iteration of Batman from a parallel universe to some degree. Her film was cancelled due to various corporate decisions regarding the quality and budget of the film and also regarding the direction of the DCEU franchise for the future, and will remain unreleased.

John Stewart

edit

John Stewart (portrayed by Wayne T. Carr) is a member of the Green Lantern Corps. He is one of the human officers of the Corps assigned to protecting the sector of the universe that contains the Milky Way Galaxy and Earth. The character was to be featured in Zack Snyder's Justice League, in the final sequence of the film, discussing with Bruce Wayne the events of the film and their aftermath. The scene was shot in director Snyder's backyard and completed but was left out of the film on Warner Bros. studios' request, and the scene reshot with John replaced with Harry Lennix's Martian Manhunter.
