In the 20th Century, France was sharply divided by two conflicts: in WW II, France was invaded and occupied by Nazi Germany and many French citizens were deported to death camps and concentration camps; in the 1950s anti-colonialist conflict in Algeria, the debate over whether or not to keep control of Algeria, then home to over one million European settlers nearly led to civil war.
