WISER Topic Selection
editI have selected to edit the page entitled Surveying on Wikipedia for Dr. Lipuma's ENG 352 class in the spring 2012 semester at NJIT.
Reason for Selecting this Topic
editI selected the topic of Surveying because since October of 2006 I have been working in the field of Land Surveying, under the guidance of a Professional Licensed Land Surveyor in the state of New Jersey. I have also been studying Land Surveying for 5 years now in College and plan to make Land Surveying my life's work. I feel that I have more knowledge than the average person would have about the field of Land Surveying. I feel that this article needs expert support and revisions because under the Land Surveyor header there is at least 5 paragraphs that either the original author or the Wikipedia community feels should have a proper citation and source for the material. I feel that I will be able to provide a greater level of detail for some of these paragraphs.
Proposed Edits
editAfter reviewing the article cited above the Wikipedia community has come to the conclusion that expert revisions are needed for this page. There are several areas and paragraphs that have a tag that a citation is needed as well as a note at the beginning of the page. I firmly believe that multiple citations as well as revisions are needed to clear this page up and in turn better inform anyone who is not versed in the subject as I am. All of the revisions I propose to make are under the section Land Surveying. There are many paragraphs in this section that have a tag on them requiring a citation. The first revision I propose to make is to add a new paragraph between the first and the second paragraphs in the aforementioned section. In this paragraph I wish to add the definition of a monument. The first paragraph explains with an example of a monument but does not use the actual definition. The third paragraph in this section speaks of what is commonly used to represent an artificial or natural monument in modern Land Surveying but does not speak of the other two types of monuments. I wish to clear all of the ambiguities by adding a definition of monuments and give examples of the four types of monuments that are used in surveying. The second revision that I propose to make is in the existing second paragraph of the aforementioned section. This paragraph is about a concept known as extrinsic evidence but does not use the actual term. I propose to reword the paragraph to better explain extrinsic evidence. I also plan to include the definition of extrinsic evidence in this paragraph. The third revision I propose is for the existing fifth paragraph of the aforementioned section. This paragraph asks for a citation and I plan to add a citation using the book that I used in many surveying classes at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). I also plan to expand this paragraph with the information found from this source, expanding the process of the first stage of performing a boundary survey. I also propose a revision for the next paragraph, the sixth paragraph in the aforementioned section, which speaks of the second step of conducting a boundary survey. This section will have a citation added and be expanded as well. The last revision I propose is to finish the three paragraphs on the three steps of completing a boundary survey. This will be done by adding a citation and expanding the last paragraph in the aforementioned section. All three of these paragraphs shall have the same source, which is the textbook mentioned for the first of the three paragraphs.
