Lusail City Football Club is a football club based in Doha, Qatar. The team currently competes in the QAL, the third tier of the Qatar football league system. [1] Although it is named as an amateur league, more than half of the teams have proper training facilities and give their players a salary and medical cover and unlike the Qatari 1st and 2nd tier, there is no limit on foreign players.
The Lusail City football team was founded by current chairman Ahmed Abbasi and Boualem Benou in the summer of 2013 to participate in the newly formed QAL. The team briefly uses the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium training facilities for its training.
History
editThe team was formed in 2013 under the name Ittihad Al Asdika which translates into Friends United. The team then changed its name to Lusail City FC for the 2014/2015 season. The team had an interesting mix of young ambitious players and experienced former internationals. They managed to finish 2nd in the table on their maiden season with striker Sofiane Rersa finishing as joint top scorer with 22 goals. This was under the guidance of coach Zoheir Bensdira.[2]
The next season saw a number of the experienced players calling it time on the game and a number of other important players leaving. The team had a season full of mixed results and had a mid-table finish. The next two seasons saw the team finish in the bottom half both times and this was mainly due to a mass exodus of players and injury troubles.
In 2016 Lusail City played a friendly match against the Singapore national football team who were in Qatar for a training camp. They went down 4-2 with Ghanaian forward Taufic Mumin scoring Lusail's two goals.
