I'm a resident of Cascade, Michigan, which is near Grand Rapids. Before that, I lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Urbana, Illinois, and Seattle, Washington. I've also travelled extensively and lived off-and on in India. I was born in Cascade in 1963.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts in economic and social policy from James Madison College at Michigan State University in 1984, and a Master of Public Policy from the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan in 1987. I also hold certifications as a Registered Scrum Trainer Fellow from Jeff Sutherland's Scrum Inc., as a Certified Enterprise Coach from the Scrum Alliance, and as an Economic Development Finance Professional from the National Development Council.

Before going to work in the private sector, I worked for 15 years at the University of Michigan, and the University of Illinois. I'm currently a coach and consultant in agile software development. I travel the world doing this work, and most recently have spent an extensive amount of time working throughout India and Nepal.

Since 2002, I have been learning to play the Turkish oud, and am now studying the Turkish tambur. Earlier in my life, I played the euphonium. Listening to music is one of my greatest joys in life, especially any kind of improvised music.

I am a devotee of the poetry of Walt Whitman. I think that Whitman's Leaves of Grass contains just about everything you need to know to live a good life.

In addition to Whitman, among the people who have had a profound impact on my life are Abraham Lincoln, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jiddu Krishnamurti, John Coltrane, Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, Martin Luther King, Frank Lloyd Wright, Cecil Taylor, Victor Wooten, Ramana Maharshi, Swami Vivekananda and Sri M
