Who am I?

edit

Hello, my username is Fightingirish. I've been an avid Wikipedia editor since December 2005, with over 2000 edits so far.

I am a member of WikiProject:Radio Stations and WikiProject:Television Stations, and have been working hard at creating quality articles in regard to broadcasting. Granted, I may be a tyrant and grammar fanatic at times, but I feel that this approach helps to create strong articles. Primarily, I concentrate on sentence and paragraph structure, create compromise articles that take into account various differences in opinion, and adding sources, logos and history.

Purpose of this userpage

edit

What is all this crap doing here? This page serves two purposes. One, to give a little background on who I am. Second, I plan to refer to this page often for my own editing purposes, and have included various templates and resources that I refer to often. You may find this information useful too, and if that's the case, by all means help yourself. All I ask is that you don't alter or edit anything, including this user page or any of my custom templates, unless the purpose is to correct a userbox or something. If you have anything to add, please refer to my talk page.

Things I've been working on

edit

I have a wide variety of interests, including...

Broadcasting and media

edit

In a previous life, I did indeed work behind the mic in radio broadcasting. Did both FM broadcasting and AM broadcasting, in Rock, alternative and country formats. Seeing a need to afford the finer things in life (rent, food, etc.), I left the business and went into sales. I still have a longtime interest in broadcasting and media, and pursue it here and via my own blog. I am an avid participant in articles regarding both radio and television.

As mentioned at the top of the page, I am a stickler for readability, accuracy and grammar. I have worked at contributing well-sourced (when possible) historical information and old logos. After all, everything looks cooler with pictures! I've also been very adamant at removing cruft and other crap like full staff and schedule rosters. These look foolish on articles and waste a ton of space.

Current radio station article projects

edit
  • Years in radio pages are being worked on, with original sign-on dates, events, births, deaths, etc.
  • Radio establishments categories
  • Removing outlandish schedules and lists that are redundant and clutter up articles
  • Adding to historic and current logos
  • Filing in userbox information

Progressive talk radio

edit

As noted by my blog above, I still foster a strong interest in broadcast media. Why did I start that crazy thing? It was something different, and nobody else was really doing anything similar at the time. Sure, liberal talk radio has a long way to go, and is much maligned (mostly by conservatives, but they complain about everything). But I have always championed the underdog. I believe in the whole Rocky thing.

On Wikipedia, I started the progressive talk radio and I.E. America Radio Network articles. They still need a little work and updating, and that is one of my main goals. Also did a full rewrite of the Air America Radio article, which was a complete mess and badly scarred by the many edit wars taking place on it. I lopped off a bunch of cruft, sent some to spinoff pages and made an article that I think represents the interests of both sides (the good and the bad, from both sides of the political spectrum). Apparently, it worked, as it has not been reverted or significantly edited in the past month or so.

And no, contrary to these articles and my blog, I don't contribute much to controversial political articles. They have enough activity and flame wars, and I much prefer to avoid that scene altogether. Plus, I'm not into gossiping about old bureaucrats. Not my scene.

Movies

edit

I am an avid cinema buff. I helped to improve the Alfred Hitchcock article and have made many contributions to the various James Bond pages.

Roads

edit

Okay, I admit it. I'm a roadgeek. I've been working on adding things to various articles regarding interstate highways, U.S. routes and state highways. In the future, I plan to do an article about the spur route of Wisconsin Highway 794, which is a half mile of unsigned road that gets no respect whatsoever. Think I could build it up to about 30K or something? :)

In the future, I'd like to contribute to a very important project called Antarctica Highways.
