Matthew Bobrowsky, Ph.D.
As of 7/7/14, Dr. Matt Bobrowsky is the Director of Special Programs at Delaware State University. Previously Dr. Bobrowsky served as the Director of the Lecture-Demonstration Facility in the Department of Physics at the University of Maryland. This is a collection of over 1,600 science demonstrations. He teaches physics and, for many years, has taught astronomy. Dr. Bobrowsky is involved in educational activities on all levels, kindergarten through adult, and is often asked to be an after-dinner speaker or the keynote speaker at special events. He conducts professional development workshops for science teachers, and serves on the Science Advisory Committee in his local school district.
Dr. Bobrowsky is a Shapley Lecturer for the American Astronomical Society and has received a number of awards for teaching excellence from the University of Maryland, including the Stanley J. Drazek Teaching Excellence award (given to the top two instructors out of approximately 800), and the Board of Regents’ Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching (given to the top three instructors out of 7000).
Dr. Bobrowsky speaks about a variety of topics such as the scale of the universe, life in the universe, misconceptions about science among students and the public, the process of science, science vs. pseudoscience, and interacting with people who are skeptical of well-established scientific information, such as the age of the earth, the age of the universe, and biological evolution.
In his scientific research, Dr. Bobrowsky has undertaken both theoretical and observational astronomy. He developed computer models of planetary nebulae — clouds of gas expanding outward from aging stars — and has observed them with telescopes on the ground as well as with the Hubble Space Telescope. Dr. Bobrowsky is particularly interested in how planetary nebulae form and acquire the variety of shapes that are observed. One of the planetary nebulae that he investigated is the Stingray Nebula, which he discovered.
