This is a list of characters in A Certain Magical Index, a Japanese light novel series written by Kazuma Kamachi and illustrated by Kiyotaka Haimura. The series follows the conflict between Espers, individuals residing in Academy City who have obtained abilities with the help of science, and Sorcerers, individuals possessing magic-based powers. Characters that have debuted in spin-offs and other adaptations are also included.

Accelerator

Accelerator (一方通行, Akuserarēta)[a] is a student enrolled at Nagatenjouki Academy in Academy City and the most powerful Level 5 esper (the rating used on the seven most powerful espers) with an ability to manipulate vectors.[3] Accelerator also has an ability to reflect incoming vectors such as the ultraviolet light, causing his hair and eyes to respectively become white and red.[4] He gets shot to the head while rescuing Last Order, which resulted in him relying on battery-powered electrode wrapped around his neck to connect to the Misaka Network and do computation to activate his power.[3] Accelerator is the protagonist of the spin-off manga series A Certain Scientific Accelerator.[3]

Aogami Pierce

Aogami Pierce[b] (青髪ピアス, Aogami Piasu, lit.'blue hair and piercings') is one of Toma Kamijo's classmates and the elected class representative. His full name is unknown, hence he is only being addressed by his appearance of blue hair and earrings.[6] He is also nicknamed as Blau, the German word for blue.[7]

Seiri Fukiyose

Seiri Fukiyose (吹寄 制理, Fukiyose Seiri) is one of Toma Kamijo's classmate known for her forehead, earning her the nickname Forehead Deluxe, which she uses to knock him down instantly. Fukiyose is referred to as "ironclad woman" because she lacks sex appeal despite her pretty appearance. She participates in Daihaseisai, a sports festival in Academy City, as a member of its executive committee.[8]

Shiage Hamazura

Shiage Hamazura (浜面 仕上, Hamazura Shiage) is a Level 0 esper (the rating used on espers with no powers) in Academy City and the leader of Skill Out, a group consisting of Level 0 espers, before joining the dark side organization ITEM as their chore boy and driver.[4]

Aisa Himegami

Aisa Himegami (姫神 秋沙, Himegami Aisa) is a self-proclaimed sorcerer who is often seen wearing a miko outfit and possesses an ability called Deep Blood,[c] which attracts vampires and turns someone who have drunk her blood into ashes.[10] Himegami attends the Misawa Cram School in Academy City, where her ability becomes involved in an incident and she is saved by Toma Kamijo from an alchemist.[10][11]

Index

Index Librorum Prohibitorum (禁書目録, Indekkusu),[d] often referred to as Index, is a young nun belonging to the religious organization Necessarius of the English Puritan Church who has memorized the 103,000 grimoires of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, hence bearing the name, due to her eidetic memory.[4]

Teitoku Kakine

Teitoku Kakine (垣根 帝督, Kakine Teitoku) is the leader of a dark side organization in Academy City called SCHOOL and the second most powerful Level 5 esper with an ability to manipulate an unknown matter called the Dark Matter.[13] Kakine is the protagonist of the spin-off manga series A Certain Scientific Dark Matter.[13]

Toma Kamijo

Toma Kamijo (上条 当麻, Kamijō Tōma) is a high school student in Academy City who has an ability in his right hand to negate magic and science-based powers called the Imagine Breaker,[e] despite being a Level 0. Kamijo becomes amnesic after saving Index, but he pretends to be normal in front of her and his peers to maintain the status quo.[14]

Seria Kumokawa

Seria Kumokawa (雲川 芹亜, Kumokawa Seria) is a student in Toma Kamijo's school, but her year and class are unknown even to the teachers.[16] Kumokawa is known for her headband and bare navel when wearing the school uniform.[15] She is employed by Kaizumi Tsugutoshi, one of the twelve directors of Academy City General Board, as his advisor due to her intelligence.[16]

Mikoto Misaka

Mikoto Misaka (御坂 美琴, Misaka Mikoto) is a student of Tokiwadai Middle School in Academy City and the third most powerful Level 5 esper with an ability to manipulate electromagnetism. Misaka uses it when shooting a coin at tremendous speed similar to a railgun, which is her nickname and power's name.[17][f] She is the protagonist of the spin-off manga series A Certain Scientific Railgun.[18]

Suama Oyafune

Suama Oyafune (親船 素甘, Oyafune Suama) is a math teacher in Toma Kamijo's school. Oyafune is obsessed with making herself beautiful, such as carefully selecting skin-care products, cosmetics, and brand-name fashions, because of her belief that the opposite is disadvantageous.[20]

Kuroko Shirai

Kuroko Shirai (白井 黒子, Shirai Kuroko) is a student of Tokiwadai Middle School in Academy City and a member of Judgment, a student-based organization that maintains peace and order in the city. Shirai is Mikoto Misaka's kōhai and roommate, whom she calls as "Sissy" (おねえさま, onē-sama, lit.'revered big sister').[17] She is a Level 4 esper with a teleportation ability.[22]

Misaki Shokuhou

Misaki Shokuhou (食蜂 操祈, Shokuhō Misaki) is a student of Tokiwadai Middle School in Academy City and the fifth most powerful Level 5 esper with an ability to manipulate minds called Mental Out.[24][g] In school, Shokuhou is referred to as "Queen of Tokiwadai" and leads a clique called the Shokuhou Faction.[25] Her past is explored in the eleventh volume of A Certain Magical Index: NT, which involves meeting Toma Kamijo before his amnesia.[26] Shokuhou is the protagonist of A Certain Scientific Mental Out, a spin-off manga series that follows her campaign for the next student council president.[25]

Motoharu Tsuchimikado

Motoharu Tsuchimikado (土御門 元春, Tsuchimikado Motoharu) is one of Toma Kamijo's classmates and a sorcerer-esper hybrid; he is an onmyōdō user and a Level 0 esper with an ability to repair his damaged body called Auto-Rebirth.[h] Additionally, Tsuchimikado is a spy working with Necessarius, Aleister Crowley, and the Academy City General Board at the same time.[28]

Komoe Tsukuyomi

Komoe Tsukuyomi (月詠 小萌, Tsukuyomi Komoe) is Toma Kamijo's homeroom teacher who majors in pryokinesis and is well-versed in psychology.[29] Despite her height of 135 cm (4.4 ft) and having a childish voice and mannerism (e.g. ending her sentences with a Japanese copula desu), Tsukuyomi is an adult who drinks and smokes.[30] Because of her appearance, she is listed as one of the seven mysteries of Academy City.[29]

Aiho Yomikawa

Aiho Yomikawa (黄泉川 愛穂, Yomikawa Aiho) is a physical education teacher in Toma Kamijo's school and a member of Anti-Skill, the security force of Academy City. Yomikawa is the legal guardian of Accelerator and Last Order.[32]
