editAlan Livingston is best known for his leadership of the development of University College Falmouth between 1987 and 2009[2]. He has also played significant roles in creative industries education in the UK since the early 1980s[3]. in 2006 he was awarded the CBE for services to Higher Education. He is now a member of the UK Design Council, and Visiting Professor in Visual Communication at the University of Ulster.
Early Life
editAlan Livingston was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1947. He was educated at Methody (Methodist College Belfast), followed by Ulster College of Art & Design (now part of the University of Ulster), where he graduated in 1967 in typography and graphic design. Between 1967 and 1978 he was a designer practising in Belfast, London and Preston, where, having become an Associate Partner in Building Design Partnership (BDP), he moved into teaching design in 1978.
The Public Sector
editIn 1978 Alan Livingston made the critical move from the private sector of design to the public sector of design education: he assumed the role of Head of Division of Graphic Design at Preston Polytechnic (later Lancashire Polytechnic, and since 1992, the University of Central Lancashire). In 1982 he became a member of the Graphic Design Board of the CNAA (the Council for National Academic Awards – the degree awarding authority for the non-university sector in the UK between 1965 and 1992). He also became the Head of the School of Design at Preston in 1982, later to become Dean of Art & Design in 1983, and Dean of Arts in 1985. The title of Professor was conferred by the Polytechnic in 1986.
