Air pollution

Air pollution is a major problem of Kolkata. According to a 2022 report on global air quality, small particles with levels of PM2.5 are highly present in Kolkata, that can enter the lungs and harm human forming heart and respiratory diseases including cancer. Lung cancer rates in Kolkata are than in other cities.

Reasons

Transportation and diesel pollution are major contributors to Kolkata’s air pollution.

According to the SwitchON Foundation, an environmental conservation group based in Kolkata, the city’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) has fluctuated in recent times from moderate to poor. By other standards, air quality in Kolkata can dip into the “very unhealthy” zone.
