Alatari - Online handle derived from Alatar the Blue who is one of the Istari in the fictional world created by J.R.R. Tolkien. A set of books that kept me bleary eyed and missing some school and summer work during 1979-1982. There was a time that if you named a character at random from any of his works I could tell you who they were and their significance to the Middle Earth tales. This probably accounts for the lack of dating during that period...

2011: Changed

  • Existentialist emphasizes human capability. There is no greater power interfering with life and thus it is up to us to make things happen. Sometimes considered a negative and depressing world view, your optimism towards human accomplishment is immense. Mankind is condemned to be free and must accept the responsibility.
  • Materialism stresses the essence of fundamental particles. Everything that exists is purely physical matter and there is no special force that holds life together. You believe that anything can be explained by breaking it up into its pieces. i.e. the big picture can be understood by its smaller elements.

2008:

  • Postmodernism is the belief in complete open interpretation. You see the universe as a collection of information with varying ways of putting it together. There is no absolute truth for you; even the most hardened facts are open to interpretation. Meaning relies on context and even the language you use to describe things should be subject to analysis.

History

edit

In 1978 I bought my first machine: a Commodore PET 2001-N with 16k RAM and no input device. I was 15 and had cleaned out my college savings and I kept it hidden in a large box in the basement entering all my own programs by hand. Boy was there some arguing when it was found. After all was said they bought me the missing tape deck so I could actually load software. Later I started work at the first software store in St. Louis (CompuSoft) where my friend and TRS-80 owner worked. The owner needed a display PET and I was to bring mine in. Drove it seat belted in the passenger seat every day after school. Spent a lot of time on the TRS-80's and the lone Apple II. The Apple got very little attention for the software titles for the TRS-80 were so numerous and the business clients thought of it as a game only machine. Guess the color graphics worked against it in 1979 and the distribution in St. Louis was from only one store called Computer Country. Went thru 4 years of college, my PET gathering dust while I wasted my time learning PL/1, FORTRAN and COBOL and one useful class of 8088 Assembly language on IBM 5150's. Pieced together my first 8088 clone after graduation and have worked on them and with them ever since...

Thoughts

edit
  • I can not believe the number of pages that link to the Personal Computer article.
  • Wikipedia politics is a strain on the prefrontal cortex...
  • You can have a job, a family and play an on-line game or you can have a family, a job and edit Wikipedia or you can edit Wikipedia, play an MMORPG and be divorced.
  • Eve was the hero of the Genesis creation myth. Despite the surety of death, she curiously and bravely, ate of the forbidden tree and elevated humanity to full consciousness. The serpent didn't lie or deceive her as the narrative says that God states: "man has now become like one of us(how many gods are there?), knowing good and evil". There was no individual Eve or Adam in our genetic past; it's just a misinterpreted parable that gave a basis for subduing woman in societies.
    • Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Eve-level hero. She sought forbidden knowledge, despite the possibility of death or suffering, and brought down a corrupt leader.
    • There was no sin and nothing for Jesus to die for.

Yeah this page is woefully out of date...
