Bio
editAbout me
editI am a new student editor to Wikipedia I'm familiar with the site but I've never made any edits or changes to any articles I've viewed before, I hope to keep my work unbias and accurate. My hobbies include fishing, camping and hiking, exposure to nature can increase our health, lower stress and increase healing.[1] Other activities I enjoy as well are painting, drawing and reading.
My Wikipedia interests
editI hope to spend my time using Wikipedia well by presenting meaningful and accurate additions to articles I feel are bias or incorrect, and if I'm still active on Wikipedia in the future after the completion of my course I'll probably work towards pages that interest me like pages on wildlife or the outdoors.
Article evaluation
editI've taken a few courses of computer science in the past before and I was interested in combinatorics, a form of mathematics used in computer science for counting. When reading about combinatorics the Mathematician H.J. Ryser was mentioned as "one of the major figures in combinatorics in the 20th century"[2], I then visited his Wikipedia article dedicated to him and found three aspects worth mentioning: Its lack of info, its lack of citations, and its lack of structure and completeness.
Info
editH.J. Ryser's article implements a general idea about his accomplishments and who he was, but it fails to present any real deep information about him especially when comparing him to his partner Leon Mirsky. H.J. Ryser's article only mentions four topics about him; his early life, his career, his books, and a few papers he wrote, with his career being the bulk of his information and his published documents only having a few bullet points each. In Ryser's early life we learn about where he lived, his family, and his school, but little much else given such has how did he die? did he have a family? Did he ever retire?. We see this again in his career life with it only stating the names of some of his works but not what his work was or why he was a major role in it? I would've liked to know more about H.J. Ryser but with him being mainly prominent in the 1960's-1980's its hard to find much information on him.
Citations
editWhile the article states that it was last edited on 28 April 2021 it still remains with many dead links that give you an error when visited. Many of the references are outdated as well and no longer exist or are unviewable eBooks, such as H.J. Ryser's biography at Ohio State University and H.J. Ryser's memorial issue. With many other eBooks being unviewable unless bought, and with these books being extremely old its hard to find one or find one that is affordable.
Structure
editH.J. Ryser's article dedicated to him lacks completeness and information, his subtopics of "Early life" and "Career" fail to mention much information and are very under-represented. When discussing Ryser's subtopic of his early life we receive only two sentences of information: Who his parents were and what certificates/diplomas he was awarded. this information alone isn't enough to create a complete biography. His "Career" subtopic is slightly better represented but still under-represented as it only states the names of theories he contributed to but not how he contributed or how his work was substantial to the creation of these theories. It also later states that he would go on to become a professor at Syracuse University and later an editor for journals such as Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Linear and Multilinear Algebra (dead citation), and Journal of Algebra something that ought to have been included in his biography. In whole the structure of this article feels very under-represented as it only mentions the names of H.J. Ryser's work and some facts about him but offers very little depth into who or what his work was.
Summary
editIn summary H.J. Ryser article offers the basic knowledge about Mr. Ryser but fails to scratch the surface and tell us more about his role in combinatorics or even how he died, besides knowing where and when he died we know very little of his death with him only dying at the age of 61. Now I know that H.J. Ryser isn't the most well known mathematician so its understandable that very little is known about him, but considering his role in combinatorics he still ought to be better represented.
