Descendant WikiProject parameters

Description of suggested change:

Add the rest of the Descendant WikiProjects to the optional parameters (e.g, `security=yes|security-importance=Low`). Tule-hog (talk) 01:17, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

Apologies, this is a distinct request from the one below it. Here I am referring to missing subproject parameters in the primary Computing template itself (used to mark subprojects as well as their importance via <subproj>-importance={Low/Mid/High}).

Currently missing (followed by a recommended parameter name) are:

This is the only discussion I've seen - I presumed it was a default behavior for WikiProject templates and their descendants, and this was simply out-of-date.

This is the right place for a discussion about adding to this template, and a notification post at WT:WikiProject Computing should bring interested project members to this page to express their opinions. A search of the archives on that page might reveal past discussions about adding descendents. Did not realize I had stepped into a classic WikiProject snag with this. Thank you Paine for recommending a search through the archives. Here is a list of similar past discussions:

• BOLD roots
• proposal of the banner
• creation of the banner
• inclusion as rescuing dead projects - recommends only adding descendants that are dead
• denied council proposal - more to do tagging any two WikiProjects, but touches on issues with bots and banners.
• misunderstanding? - this one seems to imply the <subproj>=yes syntax does not also add the article to the actual descendant project? This is hopefully incorrect, as the whole point of the unified banner is doing both. If it is not just added syntactic sugar for adding to a descendant project, I would oppose the proposal I'm making.
• descendant-by-descendant - recommends asking each descendant project. Don't want to create unnecessary bureaucratic processes, but might be worth asking the currently included children again as well.
• similar proposal - went silent, same request as mine

From browsing through these, my take-away is that a couple of bold edits created the initial banner feature, and further calls to standardize it went un-answered. The misunderstanding post is worrying, but as far as I can tell incorrect - the descendant parameters also add the article to the descendant project (e.g., Patch (computing) is correctly sorted). How is the child-parent organization of projects established. Is there a database or a list or what? In other words, what is your source for your list above of missing children? ~Kvng (talk) 15:18, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

Thanks. Clearly there are many cases where a child project has it's own WP banners. It is currently acceptable to use either these banners or parameters in the parent banner, if available. The question is whether we need to improve the "if available" situation. I guess a reasonable answer is, why not? I can't think of a reason why not. ~Kvng (talk) 15:01, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

Further, I believe I've seen consensus established against editors systematically altering articles to use a parent banner+child parameter, instead of multiple banners. I am having trouble finding that discussion though. Tule-hog (talk) 22:08, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

Add a WikiProject Databases option (i.e. databases=yes).

This is a sub-proposal of an earlier one, split off because it is less significant. See all proposals for WP Databases, each of which already intended to add the suggested parameter to this template.
