School/Elite proxy

edit

This IP is also shown as being an elite proxy by [1], as well as some other IPs that appear to be educational. Should the template be changed to also say that it could be used by non-affiliated people?--69.223.191.153 (talk) 00:21, 26 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

The code that replaces the IP address parameter with the actual IP address uses a dead tool from labs (https://tools.wmflabs.org/splinetools/whois/ip/). Could someone replace the code so that it directs to a whois that works? Perhaps whatismyipaddress.com which is what the Geolocate button at the bottom of IP talk and contribution pages links to? Stabila711 (talk) 22:17, 2 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

I updated the template to remove the deadlink, but will need to get better consensus here as to exactly what to change this to, and ensure it is well tested. Note, the footer of all ip talk pages ALREADY has WHOIS and ALL the RIR links. — xaosflux Talk 23:40, 4 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
The relevant piece of code could be copied from {{whois}} I think. Bazj (talk) 08:32, 5 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
Feel free to mock it up in Template:Shared IP edu/sandbox (I synced that sandbox before the last edits), after sandboxing go through the testcases - if they all work feel free to open a new edit request to have it synced to the main template. If you just wanted to suggest someone else work on it, they can do the same. — xaosflux Talk 14:39, 5 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

If this template is used without the name parameter, then the template text reads:

"Your IP address, xxx.xxx.xx.x , and may be shared by multiple users, so you might receive messages on this page that were not intended for you."

Can the " , and" after the IP address be included only if the first parameter is specified?

Abuse reports

edit

Why does this template say that "abuse reports" will be sent to network administrators? To me, that sounds like Wikipedia will notify the school, but someone assured me that it wouldn't happen. Is that just saying that vandalism will be reported to WP:AIV? I think the template should be made more clear. Kailey 2001 (talk) 23:55, 28 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Schoolhouse

edit

There have been a few times that editors have expressed a dislike for the "juvenile" schoolhouse image. I wonder if something derived from File:L'Etude-Boizot-BMA.jpg might be a more mature choice. Thoughts? LeadSongDog come howl! 19:04, 3 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

I think you've gone a little too far in the other direction. Perhaps a mortarboard would be better? 146.96.41.154 (talk) 20:21, 16 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
How about this version of Wikipe-tan? It's an accurate depiction of roughly half of the people who vandalize from these IPs; on one hand, it might make them more inclined to be a productive part of Wikipedia when they see an image they can relate to, while on the other hand, it tells them "yeah, we know you popular girls vandalize and its not just computer nerds." Bold differentiation text for Shared IP X

edit

Please revert this edit [2] in accordance with WP:BRD. All of the Shared IP X templates bold the part of the template that differentiates them, thus on this template it is the part that says educational institution. Another possibility would be to add a title line instead of the bold text, but something should be retained to do this, and it should be made consistent with the other templates. Let's discuss what's best. Bsherr (talk) 15:20, 10 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Please change

[[Special:Userlogin|Create an account!]]

to

[[Special:CreateAccount|Create an account!]]

to avoid a misleading link. The text "Create an account" should lead to the page for creating an account.

When a abuse email is added to the template, it says (let's asume the school is Example School):

In the event of vandalism from this IP address, Example School response team has requested that Wikipedia administrators consider a short duration soft block,

After "Example School", " 's " has to be added as it doesn't make sense without it. — Yours, Berrely • TalkContribs 15:08, 14 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

To editor Berrely:   done differently. See example that shows I've inserted the definite article "the". Thank you for raising this issue! P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 16:04, 14 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
