Why is this template written in Irish and not English? This is an English speaking Wikipedia and on other Politics templates for other countries it is written in English. I am no trying to undermine the Irish language or anything like that in any way I am just saying that as this is an English speaking Wikipedia, it should be written in English to make it easier for users to understand. Maybe the Irish translation could be in brackets in something in the template but I feel it should predominantly be English. --Horses In The Sky 11:28, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
- The reason that Irish terms are used is because they are more common in English and this does not conflict with wikipedia policy. It would be messy to include English translations. Djegan 11:40, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
Oireachtas
editJust to note that the President of Ireland is part of the Oireachtas. Whilst the Dail and Seanad are the Houses of the Oireachtas but not the Oireachtas. Djegan (talk) 22:02, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
- I'm afraid the anon continues to 'edit war' here and at British Isles, Northern Ireland. -- GoodDay (talk) 22:30, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
Name of the state
editThis template should use the name of the state, Ireland, as the title. Using "Republic of Ireland" is incorrect. --HighKing (talk) 17:48, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
- Since this debate is already ongoing at Republic of Ireland I can't see much point in forking it here. You might also have a look at WP:FORUMSHOP. I'd accept the compromise but the title now links to the island which makes no sense whatsoever. Blue-Haired Lawyer 18:16, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
- Agreed. Change would be premature based on current circumstances. Djegan (talk) 20:03, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
- It's easy to change the link to point to the correct article, but referencing this template as "Republic of Ireland" is just plain wrong. But I take your point on not dragging the same conversation up on multiple articles. --HighKing (talk) 00:58, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
(outdent) A lot of the discussion has died down - it's probably a good time to revisit the name of the template and the words used within the template. The discussion got agreement that using the term "Ireland" is preferable unless disambiguation is required. Disambiguation is required if there is a chance that people might confuse the Irish republic with the island of Ireland, or with Northern Ireland. I this case since it's a template, what are the chances that confusion will happen? Pretty slim I think - it's only used on articles that have clearly shown that they are talking about the Irish state. --HighKing (talk) 13:17, 4 October 2008 (UTC)
- Anybody? Or will I just WP:BEBOLD and make the changes? --HighKing (talk) 11:20, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
Please do not change without consensus, leave it as Republic of Ireland. Two people, of opposing views, does not make a consensus. Djegan (talk)
- Now updated since main article has been moved to "Ireland (state)" --HighKing (talk) 01:20, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- And now it should be moved back. If nothing else the links go to an article about an island and a disambiguation page respectively. If at all possible could we at least agree for the top link to read "Ireland" (but go to Republic of Ireland) and for bottom to read "Politics of the Republic of Ireland". — Blue-Haired Lawyer 23:26, 31 January 2009 (UTC)
- Fully agree with High King. Redking7 (talk) 21:17, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Proposed compromise
editI would again like to propose a compromise whereby the top link would read Ireland but be pipe-linked to Republic of Ireland whilst the bottom link would link directly to "Politics of the Republic of Ireland". — Blue-Haired Lawyer 11:59, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- I agree with this proposal. Snappy (talk) 08:55, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
- I'd say wait until WP:IECOLL is finished and then make any changes.MusicInTheHouse (talk) 12:12, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
- I also agree with the spirit of the proposal (but would prefer a different and less confusing disambig term than RoI) but I also believe we should wait until after the current process. --HighKing (talk) 13:27, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
- Agreed, let's wait. GoodDay (talk) 18:38, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
In light of the new IMOS, there's no requirement for using RoI here as a dab isn't required. The compromise suggest above seems sensible. Any other views? --HighKing (talk) 00:43, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
- I still agree with this proposal. Snappy (talk) 07:06, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
- What new WP:IMOS? It seems just like the old one to me. — Blue-Haired Lawyer t 18:27, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
- I've changed the title but left the description underneath - hopefully it'll please most people (although probably not all) --HighKing (talk) 14:31, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
