Charm offensive
editCharm offensive redirects to Superficial charm. Bribery does not have this box. What to do, remove both listings? 200.17.141.3 (talk) 18:37, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
charm offensive goes to a specific section within superficial charm.--Penbat (talk) 19:05, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
- I've deleted it again. The material at Charm offensive is insignificant. 2602:306:C5B4:E3D0:4060:393:581D:3D36 (talk) 08:28, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
Discussion of multiple templates including this one
editJust created at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Psychology#Review_of_navigational_templates. MartinPoulter (talk) 16:44, 27 July 2013 (UTC)
In 2012, User:SummerWithMorons added these links to this template, though I'm not sure if I understand their relevance here. Are these two articles relevant to "psychological manipulation" in any way? Jarble (talk) 07:33, 22 February 2018 (UTC)
Reducing "Link bloat" on this template
editIt appears that someone stacked the "psychological manipulation" template at some point. There are 110 links in the template and the template appears in 130 articles. Examples include Popularity, Smile, Attention, Praise, Flattery, Gift, Jewish mother stereotype, Assertiveness, Suggestibility, Dumbing down, Distraction, Nudge theory, Personal boundaries and most interestingly, Persuasion.
Most of these articles don't discuss "psychological manipulation" at all; or only make some a passing mention. The articles are also not discussed in the base article "Psychological manipulation". While it is true that any human interaction (or lack of) can be corrupted, listing every human transaction is overkill. Once a reader clicks through a few of these links and finds nothing, the value of having a template is lost.
This is not consistent with WP:NAVBOX. The template is to help readers - not promote articles.
Perhaps, going forward, we might consider where these Articles fall on the continuum of Persuasion → Influence → Physiological manipulation before re-posting the PM template. Just food for thought.
Renaming template
editRenamed article from "Psychological manipulation" to "Manipulation (psychology)" to be constant with the clinical and common used term for this subject and to follow the Wikipedia naming convention for delineating terms with multiple definitions.
Psychological manipulation is not a thing. It's an obscure term that has somehow made its way into the Wikipedia lexicon and if you Google the term, mostly Wikipedia articles come up. It's a Wiki-word. It's often substituted at Wikipedia for the simple word "manipulation" that appeared in the original citations.
This term is not used in psychology, not generally used in the media, it does not appear in the DSM or or mental health catalogs, it is not in the English dictionaries.
It is occasionally used for it's sensational effect in books like |Mindf_cking, A Critique of Mental Manipulation but these are not considered "reliable resources".
Positive and negative manipulation
editI'm not keen on these section headings within the template. The article Manipulation (psychology) does mention positive manipulation but it seems slightly confused and also not relevant to the section headings in this template. The article also mentions positive and negative reinforcement, which seems more related. Perhaps this is what is being referred to, but I'm not sure it works in some instances. Like... is predatory marriage about positive reinforcement?
