Wikidata awareness
editI am planning to make this template more Wikidata aware, which means it will use data from Wikidata if no local parameter is defined. It already does this with the image, which is working well. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:10, 13 September 2022 (UTC)
- The work for this has now been done and results can be seen at Template:Infobox dam/testcases — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:22, 2 October 2022 (UTC)
- This has been deployed. If there are any comments or concerns, please let me know! — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:42, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- This has broken 13 articles at this moment because some WD values for volume are expressed in cubic hecto meters, which isn't handled by {{convert}}. They are all listed in Category:Convert errors. MB 20:24, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- Convert expects the equivalent unit e6m3. MB 20:27, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know. What even is a hectometre? Is this a standard unit and if so should I ask for the template to accommodate it? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:18, 3 October 2022 (UTC)

I've reverted this change so I can explore the issue further — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:21, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- @MSGJ A hm3 is: "Cubic hectometre": the volume of a cube of side length one hectometre (100 m). 1 hm3 = 1,000,000 m3. So convert will already handle conversion from metric to imperial if given e6m3. But it doesn't directly recognize hm3 as the equivalent of e6m3. It would probably be easy for convert to handle hm3 also if there is a need. If there are only 13 articles out of 6 million affected, they could be manually edited instead. You could bring it up at the convert TP. MB 00:06, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
- e6m3 is hardly readable, so I assume it is rendered in a more human-friendly form by the template. I'll post over there. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 06:54, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
The main barrier to making this template Wikidata-aware is that it is used by dams, reservoirs and hydro-electric power stations, so it is necessary to know what type of article we are on so that the data can be displayed accurately. For example, "volume" could refer to volume of dam or volume of water in the reservoir, "height" could refer to the height of the dam or the height of the building the power station is housed in. I have asked at WT:DAMS whether reservoirs should be using this template or not. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:18, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
I'm wondering if the image behaviour would be worth mentioning in the parameter documentation? At Kaeng Krachan Dam, an "Image requested" tag has been added at the Talk. I saw that the Infobox already had an image, but without the image parameter. I eventually figured out that it was taking the image from the Wikidata item. Thanks, Declangi (talk) 23:57, 8 October 2023 (UTC)
- Yes please! I had plans to use Wikidata for a lot more fields, but never got round to finishing it — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 06:55, 9 October 2023 (UTC)
- Done, feel free to copyedit for clarity. Declangi (talk) 22:34, 9 October 2023 (UTC)
Typo in label
editThe label for pump–generators is “Pump-generators” (but clearly should be “Pump–generators”, according to all accepted typographical norms and English Wikipedia’s style guide), and I can’t figure out how to fix it. I fixed it in the description but am not seeing how to fix the infobox template itself. Could someone fix this or point me in the right direction? Stephan Leeds (talk) 04:56, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
Infobox map with OpenStreetMap
editHi, please add a new parameter for maps of OpenStreetMaps. The same as Template:Infobox museum. Thanks, Hooman Mallahzadeh (talk) 13:33, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
- Please can you sandbox your proposed code? What is the benefit of OpenStreetMaps? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:39, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
- @MSGJ Done at sandbox. Its benefit is the ability of zooming and the appearance of "textual metadata" that makes that more useable. Hooman Mallahzadeh (talk) 14:43, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
- Ah yes, I've used it on Template:Infobox lighthouse and it works really well. I don't think we want two different maps, so if we are going to change then I think it should replace the location map completely. Do you agree? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:46, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
- @MSGJ Also works well for Template:Infobox museum see Louvre article.
I don't think we want two different maps
- No. In my opinion, add this code exactly. This code adds no redundant maps. All maps are required. Hooman Mallahzadeh (talk) 14:51, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
- I will do some more testing, but I disagree (I think) with putting an additional map on the infobox. Space is at a premium and we should not duplicate information. I would be happy to consider a direct replacement of the map — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 00:03, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

@MSGJ We can use a new parameter for show/notShow, named for example ShowMap, which yields:

editThe link for label52 needs to just be Dam#Types. The "of dams" part was removed from the section name over a year ago. lukini (talk | contribs) 18:36, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
