Unicode: Script description chapters

edit

About the chapters in Unicode text that describe the scripts (7–23).

  • I have added a column that has an external link to the Unicode chapter pdf that describes the script. Like: Georgian (Geok) → Ch 7.7. There are minor diffirences, such as groupings, appearing in the chapters, in the Unicode textbook. Interesting, not fatal.
Improvements are possible, for example re symbols, Z.... scripts (chapters 22, 23; which not all follow the regular "script"-handling), and presentational. -DePiep (talk) 15:48, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
See the extrra column. -DePiep (talk) 01:28, 11 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Script directionality

edit

I am working on this. Aim is to get these all in Wikidata. Then enwiki pull from there, whith 'overwride' option by enwiki parameter. -DePiep (talk) 21:43, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

{{ISO 15924 direction}} is deprecated and may be outdated (its data may be not updated). -DePiep (talk) 18:51, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Could {{ISO 15924 direction}} be engineered to use Wikidata as its source instead? VanIsaacWScont 19:10, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Vanisaac: Smart idea! To consider: outside of the script-self-article, one needs the Wikidata script-qid (this template does, it's automated; in {{Infobox writing system}} it is an optional parameter, e.g., for when the Infobox is used in the language article (like here)). Will editors search for the qid?* Also name change needed ('Script direction'?). Sure we want to prevent any Update maintenance task.
Do you have examples for usage? -DePiep (talk) 20:31, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
OK, but that would require the article editor to use the ISO alpha-4 ID (or equivalent). Which is tricky business, they are hard to get right, and these are not that straightfwd eg with East Asian (Chinese) related scripts. I learned ;-). Where would this renewed template be useful? -DePiep (talk) 22:33, 10 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Well, it is currently transcluded to 192 script and alphabet pages, so I would say those articles and other similar would be where the renewed template would be useful. VanIsaacWScont 00:55, 11 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Now you lost me :-(
That 192 was ~400 before I made the changes. IOW, mw is working on it (counting going down slowly, I'm fine). I am waiting to see where the old template actually is being used.
More important: looks like you have no ideas on where & how this new template could be useful. Does not this make your question idle?
My line of thinking is, that Wikidata should take care of the fact (well sourced, international), and any enwiki editors can easily overwrite locally (using |direction=). To me, this is a good line to spend my editing time on. -DePiep (talk) 01:20, 11 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Unicode ranges for this script

edit

Working on this, in Wikidata. Is not the same as "Unicode block" -- at all. Trying to get all ~200 scripts right, then enwiki can pull this from WD + local overwrite option. :-) -DePiep (talk) 21:46, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Latn refinement

edit
I have started table {{Latn in Unicode}}, to get some overview & control of this topic. It's complicated! ;-) Later more. -DePiep (talk) 21:38, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
