Removal of some key topics - why?

edit

I was surprised to discover that User:Resident Mario has removed the following articles from the topics section of the Template:Hawaiian volcanism template, with a comment "NOT directly related":

Lava fountains are, in fact, one of the fundamental defining characteristics of the volcanic eruptions of Hawaii. See e.g. Sigurdsson H. et al. (editors) (2000) Encyclopedia of Volcanoes, San Diego, Academic Press, page 448 as well as Allaby A. and M. (1999) A Dictionary of Earth Sciences, 2nd edition, Oxford University Press, page 254.

Volcanism in Hawaii is overwhelmingly concentrated along rift zones, indeed giving the islands their topography and outline. See Fiske, R. and Jackson E. (1972) Orientation and growth of Hawaiian volcanic rifts, Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, series A, volume 329, p 299-326.

Pit craters are another characteristic feature of volcanism in Hawaii, influencing both topgraphy and lava dispersal.

All three topics are as directly relevant to Hawaiian volcanism as pahoehoe and aa lava (which also occur worldwide).

Therefore, I propose to restore the three deleted topics to the template.

Pit craters and rift zones are geological items NOT isolated to Hawaiian volcanoes. This template serves not as a general mish-mash of volcanic stuff but for things unique to Hawaiian volcanoes only/mostly. There are plenty of rift and crater volcanoes. ResMar 18:18, 25 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

typography

edit

Would anyone mind if I changed the typography to use Hawaiian language spellings? That is, make them consistent with the GNIS for example? Also a template that appears in many articles might want to be tightened up a bit. For the islands that have only one volcano, one link to the article should suffice, until someone writes a separate one about the volcanic aspect. Red links make no sense in a template. Does it make sense to link to the national parks? W Nowicki (talk) 00:35, 2 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nice. ResMar 21:00, 18 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Parks

edit

Since there seemed no objection, I added the links to the National Parks. It does make the template another line longer in most sizes, so might want to squeeze down in some other way, but I think they are relevant (although their articles need to be beefed up!). Renaming of template to "Volcanism in Hawaii"

edit

Following removal of some topics associated with Hawaiian volcanism as detailed in the topic "Removal of some key topics" above, the confusion comes from User:GeoWriter regarding the template as "Hawaiian style volcanism" in contrast to User:Resident Mario regarding the template as "Volcanism in the US state of Hawaii. To avoid any more ambiguity, I propose that this template is renamed to "Volcanism in Hawaii". GeoWriter (talk) 15:04, 22 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sure. It's only a minor name change :L. ResMar 22:53, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Reorder volcanoes by age?

edit

Would anyone object if the list of volcanoes were reordered geographically/by age (east to west/youngest to oldest) rather than alphabetically? I think that ordering might be more useful to readers, though I understand there may be others who feel otherwise. Template:Cascade volcanoes is somewhat analogous to this list and the listing is done from north to south. Thanks, Aoi (青い) (talk) 08:44, 20 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

No objection, especially if a brief note can be added in the navbox stating the rationale for the order. I'm also considering an additional section for people connected to the topic of Hawaiian volcanism like Thomas A. Jaggar who have substantial Wikipedia articles. Currently no individuals are listed. Any objections or thoughts regarding that? Cheers, Jusdafax (talk) 20:17, 20 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Jusdafax, and your suggestion to add individuals to the template sounds like a great idea. Aoi (青い) (talk) 23:51, 20 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
