Usage
Place this template near the top of articles that use the list-defined reference format.
Wikipedia articles that use list-defined references, either because of the first main contributor rule or as a result of editor consensus, may be systematically tagged with {{Use list-defined references}}. The template facilitates article maintenance by enabling bots to recognize use of this format and by adding the article to the hidden category Use list-defined references. The template is invisible except in edit mode.
Use of this template is part of a continuing effort to monitor the citation formats used in articles, to assist in maintaining consistent formatting within an article. It is not a temporary "cleanup" template. Therefore, please do not remove the template without valid reason, such as a consensus that the article uses or should use a different citation format.
It is contemplated that a bot may eventually be programmed to clean up the reference format of tagged articles, correcting any incorrectly formatted references added since its previous visit, and updating the visit date on the {{Use list-defined references}} template. Please note that no such bot exists at present.
(MOSNUM script documentation may also be relevant to those interested.)
