Hall of Fame
editShould Geoff Capes be added to the hall of fame list? It says he is according to his website here.
Time Between Each Event
editDoes anyone know how much time is between each event in each heat? Are all events done on the same day for a heat or do they do one event a day or every other day? How much time is there between qualifying and competing in the finals? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Qwertasdfgzx (talk • contribs) 18:53, 29 December 2008 (UTC)
List of Commonly Contested Events
editI think many of the weights quoted in this section are somewhat exaggerated. I know, at least, that in the recent competitions, the maximum weight lifted in the squat and deadlift does not exceed 700-800 lbs, as opposed to the 900 and 1100 lb weights listed in the article. Can anybody verify or correct these weights? Runch 20:30, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
- In the older WSM competitions, deadlift weights used were heavier, but the starting height of the bar was higher, or the bar was extremely flexible, thus decreasing the actual range of motion. They took turns working towards achieving a maximum weight. The apparatus currently in use is on a pivot, with a lower starting height and with an awkward, unnatural range of motion. Instead of working towards a max weight, they have 75 seconds to rep out a weight increasing slightly each time. The squat apparatus is now similar to the deadlift as well. Tom Magee, 1650 lb partial squat shows an example of the older apparatus used. You raise a good point, though. Perhaps a separate entry can be created for some of these events (to avoid excessive material in the WSM article) discussing types of equipment used, evolution of certain events etc. However, one thing that you do have to realize is that the weights are rapidly increasing for certain events -- not necessarily because athletes are stronger now, but because athletes are now training and practicing each event. In the beginning, athletes were drawn from many different fields and made to compete in events that were new and unfamiliar to each of them. Now, many events are standardized, and there are few surprises. Ontariostrongman 00:48, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
2005 results
editThe contest ended on October 7th; Pudzianowksi won it again. More details are in the news archive at http://www.ironmind.com. Dsreyn 03:44, 15 October 2005 (UTC)
2005 Champion - Savickas or Pudzianowki
editThis is in reply to Vytis1. The contest won by Savickas as described in the news at www.ifsastrongman.com was the 2005 IFSA World Championship. This is NOT the World's Strongest Man contest. This Wikipedia entry refers to the World's Strongest Man contest currently sponsored by MET-Rx, and broadcast on ESPN.
For news on this year's World's Strongest Man contest, see the news archive at www.ironmind.com. Check the October, 2005 archive and look for entries on the 2005 MET-Rx World's Strongest Man contest - the entries for October 6 and October 7 have this year's results.
I think this raises a valid point, however. First, we should probably edit this page slightly to be clearer that this page refers specifically to the (MET-Rx) WSM contest. Second, it seems like other contests like the IFSA championship could be mentioned elsewhere - perhaps on Strongman (strength athlete) or Strength athletics, or some contest page to be created.
One other thing - I noticed that the newly created page on Savickas also credits him (incorrectly) as winning the 2005 World's Strongest Man contest. Savickas did not compete in this year's WSM contest; as far as I know, he is competing exclusively in IFSA contests now. Dsreyn 15:18, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks, Dsreyn. You are right, it was a different contest. I corrected Savickas's page also.--Vytis1 21:12, 27 October 2005 (UTC)
Drug Testing?
editWhat sort of drug-testing procedures are currently in place? Mariusz Pudzianowski: 5'9'', 287 pounds? If anyone knows where "official" information on WSM drug-testing is!
- Mariusz is just under 6'1". As for drug testing, IFSA, the former sanctioning body for WSM, says that they test for banned stimulants and recreational drugs. Their health policy is online at: http://www.ifsastrongman.com/pdf_downloads/2005_IFSA_Strongman_Health_Policy.PDF .That said, I do not believe that these test results are published, excepting a rather terse press release in 2004.
Drug Testing is very lax in such competitions and a far cry from WADA level testing. (http://www.ironmind.com/news/Worlds-Strongest-Man-Phil-Pfister-Renews-Call-For-Drug-Testing-in-Strongman/) [1]
26 Sep 2006 -- Edit
editAlthough there were some elements of truth, that wasn't exactly a balanced viewpoint presented, and there were numerous inaccuracies. I've added some new sections covering history and IFSA contributions, whilst attempting to avoid the verbal mud-slinging between IFSA and TWI.
Yes, IFSA did play a major role in the growth of the sport, and the current split may be important to some, but perhaps these details could or should be incorporated into a separate article.
Cock pushups?
editThis article says cock pushups are one of the common exercises. I've never seen this one on TV! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.192.73.130 (talk • contribs) 17:18, 3 December 2006 (UTC).
Logo
editDoesn't the logo for World's Strongest Man, have the words World's Strongest Man around the globe? SportingNonsense 01:09, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
- Yes it does. The thing is, I had to cut that logo out of the main banner on the World's Strongest Man official site, and as the banner is a (fairly) low quality JPG, it was impossible / very difficult to also cut out the words around it. The logo without the words should be fine for now, at least until someone manages to get one with the text. H4cksaw 23:12, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Wsmlogo-lettering.png
editImage:Wsmlogo-lettering.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Official Results - Top Three
editCurrently, the 1997 results list Flemming Rasmussen as coming second. That's fine, but the link goes to the page for the music producer Flemming Rasmussen, who I'm pretty sure is a completely different person. Does the link need re-directing, or was he really competing in strength events in between mixing Metallica albums? PedantKing (talk) 09:04, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

2013 Results - Spoiler
editWorlds Strongest Man 2013 has yet to be televised. It would be appreciated if 'spoiler' information could be hidden from view with an option to reveal in case some readers want to see the results but allowing those that don't want to know to get maximum enjoyment from watching the televised event.
