editLooking through this article, it seems to be a bit unbalanced, as in it's too much of a how-to article and not enough on the hazards of weight cutting. Although it does acknowledge there are dangers to haphazard weight cutting, I think for the sake of responsible information dissemination that this article needs to go into what the actual hazards are. If a nutritionist or someone otherwise qualified can add some weight (ahem) into the dangers, maybe stop some kid from doing something stupid with what little info is in this article, i think we can all live in an incrementally happier world. hateless 03:41, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- I added a specific anecdote about an athlete who was seriously harmed while cutting weight. I don't know enough about specific health problems to go into them, so I won't. There's definitely dangers to weight cutting, and they need to be addressed, but I hope that this article doesn't turn into some sort of diatribe against the practice. I've cut a lot of weight in my life and haven't suffered any problems- if you know to do it right, it's a perfectly safe practice. That could be construed as a POV statement (on what has the potential to be a very POV topic) and I'm going to work on it, but I want to say something like that in the article. Anyway, if there is any young wrestler out there who wants to know how to cut weight safely, leave a message on my talk page. Stilgar135 03:47, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
To cut weight you must start in your mind. You must make a decision to change. You must decide you will do it. Write down the reasons you want to lose weight. Be very determined to work hard. Eat a low-fat,well-balanced diet and downsize your foods. Do aerobics like speed walking. Focus on progress, not perfection! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.39.35.238 (talk) 15:13, 18 November 2010 (UTC)
Tone
editWay too much of a how-to article. Should be flagged for that.
- It IS an instruction manual. Needs a COMPLETE rewrite, with sources, with an encyclopedic tone and appropriate information for such. Some of the articles I find on WP flabbergast me. -JR 74.223.3.210 13:11, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
Dehydration
editThis article is also incorrect as to how to cut water weight. Athletes load sodium and water 5-3 days out, then completely cut sodium day two while decreasing water intake in half. On the final day no water is consumed, small energy bars/foods with predetermined weight are consumed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.175.83.112 (talk • contribs)
- I removed the following line per the above comment:
- Starting a week before competition day, athletes can avoid ingesting salt and potassium. This will make their bodies retain less water. Starting a day before competition, athletes can also avoid eating or drinking any more than necessary.
- Someone more knowledgable is free to make edits and reinsert if they have the proper sourcing. hateless 06:24, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
Muscle Loss
editThe article states that it is possible to retain muscle while losing fat, which is a common myth. It IS true that muscle loss can be SLIGHTLY reduced do to an intake of dietary protein, but dietary protein is in fact the least used source of protein by the body during times of negative energy. The primary source of protein during negative energy is stored protein in the form of muscle. Therefore, WHENEVER fat is being utilized as a source of fuel, the body will also break down muscle. http://www.timinvermont.com/fitness/fatmusle.htm —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.150.37.30 (talk) 18:08, 19 January 2011 (UTC)
Almost starting from scratch
editI've deleted most of the text of this article, which fixes the worst of the long-standing needs improvement complaints. Blech, what a mess this was. How did this steaming pile last so long? -- RoySmith (talk) 21:03, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
