Educational and licensure requirements
editThere are no formal educational or licensure requirements to become a web developer. However, many colleges and trade schools offer coursework in web development. There are also many tutorials and articles, which teach web development, freely available on the web - for example: http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Basic_JavaScript
Even though there are no formal educational requirements, dealing with web developing projects requires those who wish to be referred to as web developers to have advanced knowledge/skills in:

Disambiguating Web Developer / Web Engineer
editCan someone put up a section about the disambiguation of the two disciplines? I am curious to know the difference between the two. They seem awfully similar but the description of an Web Engineer seems to promote more design in complex systems using UML and emphasizes a larger range of disciplines. Is there any clear distinction between the two? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 140.211.104.191 (talk) 19:10, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
- The way I perceive of the two is: a web developer builds web sites, and a web engineer studies the processes used to build web sites. Will Peavy 04:10, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
Difference between Web Developer / Web Application Developer
editMy guess is that "web developer" and "web application developer" are largely synonymous, except that a web application developer may focus more on programming. Is this true? It would be good to define this coordinate term in the article. Not true
About Merging with Webmaster
editI'm strongly against it. It could just be that I'm wrong, but I've always used the term "webmaster" to be someone who administrates and manages a site, but never to mean anything to do with writing and developing it. The same in reverse for a web developer - while they write the code and whatnot, they may never really actually run the site, beyond testing, bugfixing, things like that. - I'm also strongly against the merge. --Matt Schwartz (talk) 18:46, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Potential sources
editFound a Michigan government site that provides very thorough career information on web development while looking for sources for a college essay. Could be of some use. 204.126.204.10 (talk) 15:50, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
Comparions of web developers and programmers
editI think a section comparing the two professions would be an interesting addition for the casual reader, as a layman may not necessarily know the differences and/or the scope of the work in detail.

Quality of this page is very poor
editWhy would you promote popular frameworks on Wikipedia? Why only the ones currently mentioned? Why would you promote the build of SPA's on Wikipedia (and call it required knowledge)? How can you write 'server-side languages or frameworks' in one sentence, as if they are the same? Frameworks can be both server and client-side and languages too (Javascript versus PHP). Why is there nothing about SSG's, CSR, hydratation, the edge, etc.? You get the gist... I think this page needs a make-over. 92.109.67.73 (talk) 18:50, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

This sentence makes reference to a client side scripting language and calls it web development. JavaScript is client-side and should be referenced a design class. There are also many tutorials and articles which teach web development, often freely available on the web - for example, on JavaScript. A proper way to write this sentence would be: There are also many tutorials and articles which teach web development, often freely available on the web - for example, on PHP. PHP is a backend language and can be referenced as a web development class. 2601:500:8900:7160:31F6:5105:243A:3F80 (talk) 04:05, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
- Not done: Javascript is an extremely popular backend language (probably the most popular currently, at least for new projects). See Node.js. Jamedeus (talk) 07:04, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
