In Ireland the Walls company is called HB and in the past its logo was a blue box with hb written in it but it adopted the walls red heart in the late 1990's. All of its products are the same but package under hb. A plant used to exist next door to the Birdseye plant in Dublin but i dont know of any other Hb plants in Ireland, sugesting they are all made in Walls plants and the logo change was a saving scheme on the ink used on packaging.

Sorry this is not technically accurate. Unilever own the Wall's, Birds Eye and HB brands and many other brands around the world. When Unilever devised the Heartbrand for its ice cream offerings around the world, naturally both Wall's and HB adopted it. As you suspected, this was partly to take advantage of lower packaging costs as well as the obvious brand recognition advantages in an age of growing international travel. Products are indeed made in just a few factories around Europe for distribution by the various country brands/companies which also saves manufacturing costs ... although the carbon impact is preumably high. What is the relation of Wall's and Langnese?

What is the relation of Wall's and Langnese? ——Nussknacker胡桃夹子^.^tell me... 10:39, 11 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Both were owned by Unilever but I suspect the Langnese part of Langnese-Iglo has been sold just as the Birds Eye part of Birds Eye Wall's has been in the UK. All frozen food companies have been sold by Unilever except the one in Italy. Abtract 11:18, 11 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Language

edit

I wonder if terms like "impulse hand held products" and "creative in-home products" are really appropriate language for an encyclopedia article? They sound like marketing-speak to me. I can't think how to rephrase, though. Any ideas? Tremolo (talk) 20:31, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Good point though they are industry terms ... I will think about it when I have had my (no doubt icecream-eating holiday). :) Abtract (talk) 20:37, 22 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
mmm that reads as though I own the article which of course I don't. I simply meant I will give it some thought while I am away ... Abtract (talk)
Better late than never; I have clarified it. Abtract (talk) 22:22, 8 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
And now can we do something about "value-added multi-portion products" as well? What precisely is the nature of the value added? Aren't these really no more than upmarket ice-cream blocks? --Picapica (talk) 01:07, 31 August 2012 (UTC)Reply

Renaming

edit

I see a problem with the new name ... there was another related company Wall's Meat (or similar). Abtract (talk) 22:27, 8 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

See Wall's sausages. Abtract (talk) 22:31, 8 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Year of purchase

edit

The article says (uncited) that Wall's "was acquired by Unilever in 1922" but the Unilever page says "Unilever was created in 1930 by the amalgamation of the operations of British soapmaker Lever Brothers and Dutch margarine producer Margarine Unie" - this is obviously a discrepancy :/ --92.24.8.187 (talk) 09:49, 4 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

The Unilever article is correct "On Monday September 2nd 1929 the decision was taken which brought Unilever into being on January 1st 1930" from Fifty Years of Unilever. I am guessing that the 1922 date may refer to Wall's purchase by Lever Brothers Limited, the UK arm of Unilever. I will look into it. Abtract (talk) 16:18, 26 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

It now appears to be correct on the Lever Brothers side, but Margarine Unie was, according to its Wikpedia page, formed in 1927, so not available to jointly own Wall's with Lever Brothers in 1922. Scatterkeir (talk) 00:32, 24 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

A company or a brand?

edit

I'm a little puzzled. The owner is given as:

Unilever (ice cream)
Kerry Group (meat products)

Can two departments of one company have different parent companies? Or does this mean:

  • Wall's is a brand under which two companies have rights to make/sell products, not a company in itself? In which case the page title and infobox need changing to reflect this fact.
  • Wall's (ice cream) and Wall's (meat products) are two separate companies? In which case, a single "Wall's (company)" article doesn't seem to make sense.
  • Wall's as a company is a subsidiary of Unilever, but has nonetheless licensed the name to Kerry for a different range of products?

It's a bit late to answer this but here goes. T Wall and Sons was formed in the late 19th century to make and sell sausages and meat pies; ice cream was added when it became technically feasible (between the world wars) and in order to increase sales in the summer months when meat sales declined; round about the same time the whole company was bought by Unilever. Due to the Unilever structure, the company was split into two and eventually the meat part was sold off and is no longer owned by Unilever. It is possible that the entire Walls brand is owned by Unilever and licensed to Kerry (I don't know but seem to remember reading that somewhere). I hope that helps. Hong Kong

edit

I cannot find any Wall's ice cream in Hong Kong. A web search resulted in some people suddenly missing it. Does anyone know what happened? Shouldn't Hong Kong be removed from the list of countries? http://hongkong.geoexpat.com/forum/32/thread30629.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ghormax (talkcontribs) 08:06, 12 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ice cream Van Mr. Whippy picture

edit

Under ıce cream van picture it says "A Wall's ice cream van (Ford Transit) parked in Clacton, England" but there is NYPD Police car in backside. Could this decription be wrong? Baris365 (talk) 10:25, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

The photograph was taken at the Clacton bus rally; the bus just visible in the background is a Briston RE from Eastern Counties.
The NYPD car is genuine and lives in the UK; although carrying USA plates 185GVN for exhibitions, it has a valid UK registration X603MDX.
The W1PPY number is not in the DVLA database; I suspect it was never issued. G7mzh (talk) 10:53, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

IBX Updates

edit

Hello pals,

I'd like to propose a change to this article's infobox.

Unilever is listed as the "Owner", but the IBX parameters found in the provided reference state:

"...is a subsidiary or division, omit the owner field and use the parent field instead"

If this doesn't cause any editor-friction, I'd like to circle back here soon and update the IBX myself!

Thank you to all!
