Urban Renewal

At one time downtown Waco had a large Latino community. However, their neighborhoods were demolished in various Urban Renewal efforts and replaced with parks. This would make an interesting addition to the history of Waco section. Rklawton 20:39, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Davidians

It is predjudicial to conveiniently label the Branch Davidians a cult. (by 67.30.43.47)

Describing death toll in "men ... women ... children" and concluding with "died that day" appeals to emotion does not have a neutral point of view. (by 66.66.46.93)

The exact death toll is apparently disputed, several wiki pages and linked articles all have varying numbers. (by 66.66.46.93)

The Davidian-specific links don't belong in the Waco article. If anywhere, they belong in the Waco Siege article. This article is about the City of Waco, Texas. Rklawton 20:35, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Considering that WP's own article is called "Waco Siege", and that news coverage of the time referred almost exclusively to Waco, it needs to be covered here, even if only perfunctorily. I'm a resident of Waco who gets as irked as anyone when people say the cult was "in Waco", but given the reality of Waco's notoriety in assocation with the incident, it should be addressed. Woodshed 21:17, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
I support perfunctorily. Most news readers signed of with "Waco, Texas". Information about the siege's impact on Waco and alink to the the siege article is fully appropriate. Rklawton 20:15, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Movies

TexasGonzo57 added many references to the cinematic life of Waco, many of which I believe stretching it. Action USA, Damon Crump and John Stewart are hardly well known to anyone outside of Waco, Texas, itself and I feel that the space should be reserved for actual cinematic accomplishments. Also, coming from the same circle as Damon Crump, John Stewart and many people who worked on Action USA, it seems as though it is a member of that group attempting to build up their own reputation. I move that those references be taken down as they are ridiculously obscure, even to people living in Waco, Texas, itself. Therefore, I am going to remove those references as obscure. I feel it better to keep this section devoted to real Wacoans doing real, known work rather than obscure work that only a vast minority of people will ever see.

The Great Waco Train Wreck

I would like to see that important part of the city`s history added please. I do not have the ressources to verify information.
Missjessica254 20:38, 26 December 2006 (UTC)I have found the information you are requesting but not sure how to add to the article. Any help with this would be appreciated.

Radio Stations and Local Media

I found a short list of radio stations, all owned by one company, listed under attractions. It didn't link to articles, just their websites. This is a misuse of Wikipedia and obvious POV. Either put up an objective list or drop it. It was also in the wrong section, so I deleted. This article needs an objective section on TV, radio, newspaper, other media in the area. Please be comprehensive. Goeverywhere 03:58, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Merge Downtown

The article Downtown Waco, Texas is a stub and unless there's a lot more information to provide I think it should be merged into this article. CJ 14:24, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

Agreed, the size of the stub is bigger than the downtown itself. Phaldo 19:02, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
Since this has been agreed in June and nothing has happened, I will do it myself.--Playstationdude 21:49, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
The downtown section has been removed, with no statement as to why. Based on above, I'm restoring. Missjessica254 (talk) 19:55, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

WS:COTW

This is a note to inform all interested watchers of this article that Wikisource has chosen the Branch Davidians and Waco Siege as their Collaboration of the Week.

This means that we are spending this week collecting, copying and formatting Public Domain documents related to the church and its 1993 siege. This includes speeches by David Koresh, Federal documents in the aftermath of the siege, the charges against Lon Horiuchi and the surviving church members, and early church documents whose copyright have expired.

We would encourage you all to come help us, if you have any questions, feel free to leave a question on my talk page - either on Wikisource or Wikipedia!

I hope to see some of you there, helping us document the primary sources for future research and historical analysis!

Photo of the Bushes?

Seems to me to add nothing to the article. Looks exactly like they would arriving at an airport anywhere. Says nothing about the town. - Jmabel | Talk 16:44, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Scott Podsednik

no mention of him, born in west (in northern mclennan county).

WAW

There is a popular Backyard Wrestling thing called the Waco Association of Wrestling based here, it is REALLY popular on Youtube, and I was wondering if we could note it in the article somewhere with something like; 'Waco is also the home of popular Backyard Wrestling group, WAW (Waco association of Wrestling), which has been running since 1998.'

Yes, or No? Altenhofen 01:15, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

No. Rklawton (talk) 01:17, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
No. While it doesn't have to be as notable as an article subject, it still needs to be verifiable. —C.Fred (talk) 02:46, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Dr Pepper

Any mention about Waco being the birthplace of Dr Pepper? Sandplace (talk) 03:28, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, twice. Rklawton (talk) 02:35, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

New 1892 lithograph

Just uploaded a new lithograph of Waco from 1892 at File:Waco, Texas in 1892.jpg. This one's colored so a bit prettier than the 1886 one, but it's up to you whether to use it or not. Dcoetzee 09:57, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Jessica Simpson

If the information in this article is correct, it needs to be sourced. Per Jessica herself in interviews, her grandparents live in McGregor and she grew up in DFW. Missjessica254 16:32, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Also, Waco is the birthplace of Steve Martin and Jennifer Love Hewitt!! Willie Nelson also grew up in the area and went to Baylor for a semester. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.8.52.215 (talk) 03:33, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Baylor University

I think there should be a short separate section on Baylor, or at least a more prominent mention of the school than the passing references in the current article. Baylor is a huge part of Waco, and if you didn't know anything about Waco or the university, you could read this and not even glean that. --David S

I think all three colleges in Waco should be mentioned. The Waco article doesn't even mention Texas State Technical College or McCleanan Community College which are both in Waco.ShadowWriter 23:02, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
Done. Got any school district information? Rklawton 01:02, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
Here is the website for Waco ISD. www.wacoisd.org. That should help. ShadowWriter 06:49, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

There are now two other colleges, ITT Technical Institute and ATI Career Training Center. I believe there is also a cosmetology school, but I don't know if it is accredited.--Autodafey (talk) 08:57, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Roy Mitchell executed, not lynched.

Hi Gtwfan52 and Rklawton: I'm bringing this to the talk pages just in case longer explanations are needed than can be given on edit summaries. I think the confusion is this: my edit is intended to explain that Roy Mitchell was protected by Waco authorities from lynching, and was legally executed in 1923. As is explained in the previous paragraph, the Lynching of Jesse Washington brought major, negative press to Waco, engendering attitudes towards the city that may even persist today. So, obviously my edit was poorly written, and I should thank you, Rklawton, for understanding it, and you, Gtwfan52, for being polite in your reverts and explanation. I'll see if I can come up with a better wording. Feel free to edit as you like on the main page, or make suggestions here. Thanks! -Darouet (talk) 20:37, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

P.S. I'm going to source the statement to Patricia Bernstein, who also writes about continued disparities / inequalities and bigotry in 1920's Texas. This shouldn't be a controversial statement and isn't a condemnation of those currently living in Waco. -Darouet (talk) 20:39, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
What you have put in seems accurate, but perhaps it should be broken out into its own paragraph. Legal bias viz. race is a part of the story in the history of the United States. Not to sure it isn't too weighty in an individual city article. But this I will leave for others to decide. Just my .02. Gtwfan52 (talk) 21:54, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
I think some core of it could be maintained, and a word on judicial bias introduced, but the whole thing slightly shortened... if those aren't contradictory options? The problem is, while mentioning Mitchell might be good, it's hard (I find) to concisely convey all appropriate nuance. -Darouet (talk) 23:16, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

Could someone please add a new section for the explosion that happened a few hours ago?

Just leaving this link here, i tried to add it, but it's pretty bad. http://www.theatlanticwire.com/national/2013/04/fertilizer-plant-just-exploded-waco-texas/64337/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 177.107.239.57 (talk) 08:18, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

That explosion happened in the town of West, Texas, not Waco. --Michael Greiner 18:28, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
Further, media reports are referring to the explosion as occurring in West, not in Waco—as opposed to what happened with reports filed on the Waco siege (which was technically in Mt. Carmel). The only angle I can see that would warrant a link is the involvement of the three hospitals in Waco with treating victims, but I can't see where that would justify anything more than a link to Wikinews for current stories. —C.Fred (talk) 02:16, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

Article improvement

I wanted to gauge interest about collaborating on improvements to this article. It seems to contain a lot of lists at the moment, especially of people, which should be spun off into something like List of people from Houston (not sure who qualifies). Other sections could certainly use a rewrite or expansion. Thoughts? Woodshed (talk) 11:53, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Biker shooting

There are plenty of sources for this - but... Wikipedia isn't the place for reporting or summarizing passing news events. I suggest the following: if the event itself becomes sufficiently notable for an article to stand on its own, then we should add it to Waco's "See also" section for starters. Nine deaths in a war-zone like gunfight seem pretty significant even for a major city let alone Waco, so there's a fair chance someone will (or already has) made an article out of it. Stay tuned, but let's not jump the gun. Rklawton (talk) 03:48, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

OK, here's a link to the article: 2015 Twin Peaks shooting. It' snot in very good shape, and I don't think it's yet worth adding a See also link - yet. The snit will likely hit the fan on Monday, though, with the start of the week's new news cycle. I wouldn't recommend anything beyond a link unless the story evolves into something with a much higher level of significance for Waco - like increased gun control or some other policy change. Rklawton (talk) 03:54, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

Needless hatnotes

Given that both the Waco siege and the 2015 Waco shootout are discussed in their own sections and properly wikilinked from within the article, the supposedly disambiguating hatnotes to these topics are improper and should be removed from the top of the article. I'd do it at once but perhaps it needs some brief consensus first. Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:40, 18 May 2015 (UTC)
