editI added the character description because of their complexity and importance in the story. I have also corrected the description of Ginevra as a heartless coquette to simply 'coquette,' because, shown by her rather selfish, but real, regard for Lucy and her own son, she is not totally worthless. Lucy Snowe is a strong, intelligent, and dignified character whose emotions and thoughts propel the book forward: I wish the book had a happier ending for her.
