Talk:Vani

An interesting point is that early writers refer to the region/place as Aea (Aia). In fact, Pliny the Elder refers to one of the 90 colonies of Miletus as Æa, being "the most celebrated of them all". However, the location described by Pliny the Elder would better fit with modern day Kutaisi, interestingly known to Georgians by the old name of Kutaia. Nevertheless, Kutaisi was only known to be working as the capital of Colchis from 200 BC, much later than dated artwork depicting Jason and the Argonauts myth 340-330 BC. The site at Vani dates from as early as 800 BC. Given that the name for the site at Vani is not known, could this in fact have been the original Aia, with King Aeëtes and Medea? The capital subsequently moving to a new place: Kutaia, now known as Kutaisi? Mrposhrat (talk) 12:43, 7 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
