History note
edit- Please note for keeping track of attribution history that at around 23:14, 28 January 2018, User:100.14.114.245 cut a long section out of iOS version history and pasted it into TvOS. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 21:24, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
tvOS vs TVOS vs TvOS
editThe article should be saying 'tvOS' as per the Manual of Style on trademarks, capital letters and article titles. The Manual of Style says to 'Capitalize the title's initial letter (except in rare cases, such as eBay), but otherwise follow sentence case, not title case; e.g., Funding of UNESCO projects, not Funding of UNESCO Projects. This does not apply where title case would be expected were the title to occur in ordinary prose. See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (capitalization) for more details.' Also in the Manual of Style on trademarks 'avoid: He said that EBay is where he bought his IPod. instead, use: He said that eBay is where he bought his iPod'. Furthermore, the Manual of Style on capital letters 'For trademarks, editors should choose among styles already in common use (not invent new ones)'. The term 'tvOS' is always in use everywhere in the media and in reliable, independent sources like the references in the article. We should not be making up new capitalizations like 'TvOS' and 'TVOS'. Tom29739 (talk) 22:49, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
- The Manual of Style subsection on trademarks that begin with a lowercase letter only speaks of trademarks that begin with a single lowercase letter, so it doesn't cover tvOS. I think that section should extend the exception to include multiple lowercase letters pronounced as letters, e.g. "tee vee oh ess".
- I've posted a comment on Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Capital letters to that effect. Guy Harris (talk) 23:58, 9 January 2016 (UTC)
- @Guy Harris: It seems to be a bit of a grey area in the policies so perhaps we should just use 'tvOS' because that's the naming convention that every other Apple 'somethingOS' seems to use, like iOS or watchOS. Tom29739 (talk) 12:02, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
- I think we should stick to being an encyclopaedia as we have always been, and not pander to every whim and fancy every-other company's marketing team decides to dream-up this week to misuse the English language's correct capitalisation, as we always have done on WP. This type of discussion happens EVERY SINGLE TIME Apple does this, and the answer remains the same as ever: no, only use the lead to explain, as it is perfectly adequate. The single iXxxxxx is a correct English usage, the others such as this are not. And as has been said time and time again, sources are irrelevant, as media have both their own style guides, and most follow company marketing usage. Jimthing (talk) 02:38, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

- A traditional encyclopedia would use 'tvOS' because it is the most used capitalization. Tom29739 (talk) 18:19, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- Really, says who? And they have pages on TVOS do they, as you suggest? See talk at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Capital letters, instead of needlessly repeating discussions in two places. Jimthing (talk) 09:07, 12 January 2016 (UTC)
- The MOS doesn't cover this and you (Jimthing) haven't pointed out any discussion where a consensus has been established and even if there was any, it'd have to community-wide because it affects the MOS. Hope both of you understand. For now, keep it as-is. Also, according to COMMON, the name of the article should be tvOS but remember according to English grammar conventions, all sentences starting with the trademark should be TvOS instead. --QEDK (T 📖 C) 06:35, 14 January 2016 (UTC)
- Just to input my opinion (I was one of the original editors who changed "tvOS" to "TvOS"): looking at the iOS and watchOS articles, there's a clear pattern of starting a sentence with a single capital letter, but given the term "TV" is always capitalised, and in this instance "TvOS" and "TVOS" do not have the same visual identification, and thus diminishes the established trademark. I know Wikipedia is very strong on maintaining - and certainly not diminishing - a company's trademarks wherever possible. When I one sees "TVOS", one may think "Tee-Vohs", whereas "tvOS" makes one think "tee-vee-oh-es". Further reading can include WebOS, where the trademark is "webOS". Throughout the article, there is no use of "WebOS" (with a capital W) except for the beginning of sentences. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Owleaf (talk • contribs) 05:24, 19 January 2016 (UTC)
- Actually WebOS was wrongly edited a few days ago – now reverted, as it was wrong, of course. So that is not a valid point. And no, no one thinks TVOS means the plural of 'Tivo' (!) that's just silly. And as for me not providing anything, the MOS is there precisely because of this – it says as per previously quoted: should be all CAPS, as letters are spelt out. Jimthing (talk) 04:57, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
- I understand, but where exactly did I say TVOS could be interpreted as the plural of "Tivo"? Please improve your comprehension skills before you start making those claims. Owleaf (talk) 03:13, 25 January 2016 (UTC)
- Erm... "When [I] one sees "TVOS", one may think "Tee-Vohs"..." My comprehension thus perfectly intact (or your explanation perfectly inept?). Thanks though! Jimthing (talk) 19:41, 26 January 2016 (UTC)
- My apologies: when I wrote "Tee-Vohs", I imagined the pronunciation to go something like: T (as in "tee"), V (as in "verb"), ohs (as in "ossified"). Again, apologies for any confusion :( Owleaf (talk) 05:56, 27 January 2016 (UTC)
tvOS version history should be merged into iOS version history
editIt is unnecessary to have two such technical listings. 84.173.194.174 (talk) 14:50, 8 April 2016 (UTC)
- tvOS and iOS are both two distinct operating systems, sporting different feature sets and issues. Thus, they will have quite divergent version histories. iOS is also based upon Mac OS X, which itself was based upon NEXTSTEP, which was based upon a Carnegie-Mellon version of BSD. I think for obvious reasons, we would not want to merge any of these completely different OS's version histories into the BSD version history. Adrian[232] 15:39, 8 April 2016 (UTC)

TvOS → TVOS – I've thought about it, and I think the title is more appropriate in all caps. With iOS, the actual products are the iPhone and iPad, their correct names. The official name for this device is the Apple TV, and "TV" is not formatted in lower-case letters in this case, which is why I think the name would be more appropriate in all caps. 2601:8C:4001:DCB9:4C67:276E:19E3:C6D2 (talk) 01:51, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
- Strongly oppose: I don't see that as an improvement, and, unless the majority of references to it out there call it "TVOS", I see it as being potentially confusing if we don't match the common usage. MOS:CAMELCASE says this is "a judgement call", and the discussion above didn't result in a pro-TVOS conclusion. Guy Harris (talk) 02:40, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
- Question: Is there any significant usage of "TVOS" to refer to this topic in independent reliable sources? —BarrelProof (talk) 17:44, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
- Every single source in the article that mentions it by name uses "tvOS", not "TVOS".86.130.177.16 (talk) 17:48, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose: I don't understand the nominator's rationale; it seems more like an opinion that they think the name should have been capitalized, but it isn't, and no one seems to write it like that. We don't move articles to names that no one uses (no matter how logical they may be). 86.130.177.16 (talk) 17:48, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

- "Wikipedia should make something on the games supported by Apple tv" Why? WP:NOTCATALOGUE, WP:INDISCRIMINATE.
- "for reference you can visit" ...the tvOS App Store, which will list all the games available for tvOS. Guy Harris (talk) 17:55, 21 October 2017 (UTC)
Apple TV Software 7.3 Beta Released!
editHello!
After nearly 2 years of inactivity, a new beta software for the 3rd gen Apple TV has been released! It was released just today, version number 7.3 (12H825), which adds the brand new Apple TV app into the old software even though it didn't get the same beautiful UI as it is in tvOS... I don't know how to highlight the boxes so could someone do that for me?
Note: The brand new TV app should arrive in May, and that's nearly 2 months from now.
Thanks a lot! AppleExpert1214 — Preceding unsigned comment added by AppleExpert1214 (talk • contribs) 04:36, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
Weird redirect
editIn the address bar, 'tv' turns into 'Tv' Huh?! 111.88.15.159 (talk) 16:27, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
- As Wikipedia:Naming conventions (technical restrictions)#Lowercase first letter says:
The MediaWiki software is configured so that a page title on the English Wikipedia (as stored in the database) cannot begin with a lower-case letter, and links that begin with a lower-case letter are treated as if capitalized, i.e. [[foo]] is treated the same as [[Foo]].
- The
{{lowercase title}}
template is used to make the page title start with a lower-case letter, but that doesn't affect the URL. Guy Harris (talk) 17:38, 19 February 2020 (UTC)
Release notes need to be deleted
editLet me clarify that I totally disagree with this point, but because in IOS_version_history all the notes have been deleted due to some "copyright issues" as claimed by some "good guys", the same policy should be applied to this topic.
Please check the Talk for IOS_version_history 151.81.51.223 (talk) 19:47, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
- the release notes will eventually be restored to ios version history - it was temporary whilist the afd was playing out. the release notes should be re-added to the page, however it will take a while as there are over 16 major ios versions and hundreds of versions of iOS released in total since 2007. - Evelyn Marie (leave a message · contributions) 04:33, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
