This buliding now has the AT&T logo on it we need to update it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 208.65.90.127 (talkcontribs) 19 May 2007 10:51(GMT).

I've moved the article and updated the lead; I had already made plans to get a new pic with the AT&T logo, probably tomorrow morning. AUTiger ʃ talk/work 18:10, 19 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Building features

edit

I was involved in the planning of this building and was in the first offices to move in the upper floors, which was for Executive and Legal Departments. The top floor reached into the clouds and that is where the President's and Vice Presiden'ts offices were, and we would always joke that was the reason they had tunnel vision, because of the fog up there. We had a 2 page brochure which listed the unusual features of this building that was distributed to the public, but I cannot find it now. Some that I remember are that it is less than a foot away from the back wall of the Fox Theatre, because it was built that way to save the Fox from demolition. Also, the exterior visible beams on 2nd floor are there because the building's foundation and lower floors had to be tapered smaller to allow it to fit into the bedrock a sufficient distance from Marta's construction of the subway deep underground. The oomputer support building is connected by the skyway to the main tower, and the heat from the computers is used to heat and adjust the building's temperature as needed. The Chinese pagoda style recessed terraces on all floors of the main tower are for energy conservation so that no sunlight would shine directly into the building and drain the air conditioning. Also, the windows can be cleaned by just walking out on the decks. This building was one of the first office buildings in Atlanta to have a non denominational chapel, and it got a lot of use during breaks by individual employees. The unusual red tiles in the 2-story lobby wall were selected by the then company president from a factory in Italy and shipped to America. The building was constructed around a central supporting core so that on each floor there are no obstructing columns from the center core to the windows blocking views and allowing flexible build outs of cubicles in any arrangement or walled offices anywhere, ie., no load bearing walls needed. Something was done in the design to discourage birds from roosting on the terraces but I do not remember what it was, but they never flew in them. There were many other energy saving features but I cannot remember them all. One sad thing though, and I don't mean to suggest that this building has a curse on it, but this is a true story, the Vice President in charge of the budget and overall construction and planning of this building, Mr. Steele, had a very tough time with a project this big and expansive, requiring coordination with untold agencies and entities and cost overruns, and sad to say, within days of the building being announced as finished and ready to move in, he died.12.71.9.164 (talk) 17:01, 12 August 2018 (UTC)Fran F.E.Reply
