editDoes a five year marriage really count as short? It's hardly fuckin' Elizabeth Taylor here.
Yes, though it seems it was effectively over by 1996. -- Beardo 05:09, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Needs tidying up the two mentions of Thalia. -- Beardo 05:09, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Still, a five year marriage in the entertainment business counts as a long and successful marriage, even if the underlying relationship itself had fizzled much earlier. If a Hollywood marriage can make it to the two year mark, it's considered remarkable.
Jewish
editIs he still Jewish? I saw him on him marrying Thalia...and that was a Christian church...
- I don't think Mottola is Jewish. He married Mariah and Thalia in churches of Christian denomination. 05:46, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Tommy Mottola is Roman Catholic, no Jewish, he married with Thalia in St. Patrick Cathedral, New York, Thalia isn´t catholic, she is or was Evangelical christian, so Tommy Mottola is Roman Catholic.--Hypnos St (talk) 16:25, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
- Well, today even homosexual couples get married in Christian Churches. For Catholics marriage has nothing to do with conversion anymore. Tommy IS a Jew, otherwise he would never have had so much success in his career, even after divorced Lisa Clark. And most important, had he left Judaism we would not have had Mariah Carey, after all -- as all of us know -- if you're not a Jew either by birth or by conversion, you don't have the Midas touch. 189.40.65.207 (talk) 23:54, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
He(It) would have of to refrain from making this metier...
Mottola no longer practices judaism. Neither him nor his current wife Thalia were of the catholic faith. However, getting married and photographed in a New York landmark such as St. Patricks Cathedral did mean a lot of dazzle value for them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.96.64.248 (talk) 05:32, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
So are we saying that he converted back to Christianity after he divorced his (Jewish) first wife? Apparently he didn't require Mariah of Thalia to covert to Judaism to marry him. 2603:800C:3A40:6400:3C0B:6E1D:D4CD:F39C (talk) 03:20, 27 December 2023 (UTC)
Budgeting
editThe article seems to imply that Mottola spent far too much of the record company's money on promoting Mariah Carey, but this doesn't take into account the success Carey had for the record company. Mariah Carey had more #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 for Columbia Records than anybody else had ever had (on any record label), except for the Beatles and Elvis Presley. Mottola may have been spending five times the budget of a normal artist on Carey, but her albums sold more than five times as much as a normal artist's did. --Metropolitan90 05:43, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
- It's an "open secret" that Mottola spent lavishly to launch and maintain Mariah's career.
- It shouldn't take into account that she became famous AFTER he launched her career because Mariah could have flopped and faded into obscurity. He took an incredible gamble on her that could have ruined his career. He (and she!) was lucky enough to have managed to make her a superstar and maintain her as a superstar. Mottola could promote Mariah all he wanted but the pubic had to embrace her. PR alone won't sell albums. I don't say thay as an insult to either Mottola or Carey as I am a huge Mariah fan. 05:57, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Has the much-publicized feud with Michael Jackson been omitted? There has to be a controversy section- at least mentioning this. Nothing else was known after Jackson's scathing comments about Mottola. After Michael's death Mottola emerged in the media with details about Jackson's song catalog; obviously seizing the opportunity for profit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.96.64.248 (talk) 05:44, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
Separation from Mariah Carey
editMottola formally separated from Mariah Carey May 30, 1997. It was rumored they split up in December 1996 but rumor does not suffice. I changed the date to the formal announcement of separation. 05:46, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Link to the May 30th date:

Mariah's signing to Virgin Records
editI changed the part about Mariah having one album left on Sony and signing with Virgin. Glitter was to have been Matiah's last CD for Sony but she instead bought the rights to it and released it on Virgin Records. Not to mention Mariah could not sign with another label while still legally obligated and contracted to the other. 05:57, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
Yep, she didn't even sing in her songs for glitter until she got released from contract I suspect, it's known she didn't record them herself due legal circumstances. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.21.61.22 (talk) 05:48, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
Gloria Estefan
editGloria Estefan was not part of the Latin Explosion with Ricky Martin, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, etc. as she debuted over two decades before they did. Mottola was instrumental in building her career as she was signed to Epic Records, which is part of Sony, so I moved her into the previously mentioned list of careers Mottola developed.05:55, 11 October 2008 (UTC)
External link suggestion
editAs an editor at Crawdaddy!, and to comply with COI guidelines, I am not posting the link to this article about the music industry's various mafia connections over the years, part of which is about Tommy Mottola. However, I would like to recommend it on its merits, and hope that an editor will find the time to examine the article and—if he or she sees fit—use it as a reference or post it as an external link on this page. I appreciate your time. Crawdaddy! [1]

Biography of Living Person
editThis article was rife with both dubious and especially potentially defamatory statements. Please don't restore any of the deleted material unless without reputable and verifiable sources. Wrotesolid (talk) 21:30, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
Removed unnecessary details of public defamation by Pop star Michael Jackson. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.57.174.51 (talk) 07:22, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
The article is also missing all of the biographical information which historical context would suggest. For example, does Mottola have any formal education beyond high school? What did he do about the draft, which was an incredibly important issue for people born the year Mottola was born.
Defamatory content
editRemoved reference to questionable association to "organized crime" PDF provided seems unverifiable and a part of the Biggie Smalls, Tupac murder conspiracy urban myth. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.117.223.254 (talk) 19:35, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
Family inconsistencies
editThere is no mention of the children from Mottola's first marriage to Lisa Clark, nor is there any explanation of who the mother of "Giney Mottola" is. She was born in 1994 when Mottola was married to Mariah Carey; is she a previously unacknowledged child of Thalia? The Spanish Wiki page for her says she played Thalia's character's baby in a 1995 TV series. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.221.121.179 (talk) 05:20, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
