Rank
editLaurence's rank seems to be problematic here. We have:
- Timothy Laurence: Commodore at the wedding, now Rear Admiral
- Anne, Princess Royal: Commander at the wedding, now Rear Admiral
- Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom: Commander (should be "now" as Phillips is noted as Captain)
- British Royal Family: Commodore
Someone should bring order to all this. I regret I'm not the one to do it. -- Jao 12:43, 9 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Fixed. He was promoted to Vice-Admiral in April 2007. --ukexpat 17:18, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Marriages and children
editIs his marriage to Princess Anne his first? They have no children together. Does he have any others, to which she is therefore stepmother? If, as I suspect, the answers are negative, a simple sentence to that effect would be welcome. Or, indeed, if they are positive. BrainyBabe 06:53, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, his first marriage, her second. --ukexpat 17:18, 17 May 2007 (UTC)
Tim?
editTim? Is he ever referred to as "Tim Laurence"? If so, why is there no mention of it in the article? -- JackofOz (talk) 21:17, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
- Well, 17 months is quite enough time for objections or comments. Having received none of either, I've moved the article to Timothy Laurence. -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 12:13, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- His is regularly called Vice Admiral Tim Laurence by the Royals. That is how it is listed in the Court Circular. Arg Matey (talk) 22:53, 25 March 2016 (UTC)
Arms?
editHas Timothy Laurence been granted arms? Kiltpin (talk) 19:22, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
Move
editI disagree with the move of this page from Timothy Laurence to Tim Laurence. Necrothesp gives the reason as "that is what he is called in the news reports" in other words "media".
Having Googled Timothy Laurence, and Tim Laurence, I find that he is frequently referred to as Timothy Laurence, Sir Timothy Laurence and Vice admiral Timothy Laurence. So why drop his real name, in preference for a nickname, or familiar name, when it is clear that the full version of his Christian name is in regular use?
This is a different situation to Prince Harry, who the media spells H-A-R-R-Y, but is actually spelt H-E-N-R-Y with "harry" being the preferred pronunciation.
This is a different situation to George VI who chose to use his fourth name as king, because there was no tradition of King Alberts.
This is a different situation to Ringo Star, whose real name is barely known.
Could you please restore this? The move seems quite out of order!
Amandajm (talk) 13:10, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
- I successfully moved it.
- If you think that the name "Tim" really needs inclusion, then a section with the heading Personal life needs to be created which says something like "Laurence, who is known to family and friends as Tim......". The fact that a media report nearly two years ago referred to him that way is not the stuff that makes for an enclopaedic Introduction. He isn't "commonly known" as "Tim Laurence" on the internet, except where the Wikipedia article has been picked up by others, or else in media of the most chatty and deliberately informal kind.

The Mountbatten-Windsor category
editI think the category should be removed, because he is related to the family only through marriage to The Princess Anne. His family is Laurence. It is a custom that a woman becomes a member of a man's royal or noble house, or just a family, when she marries him, but not in the opposite way. Of course, we can say he is related to the Windsors and is a member of the extended Royal Family, but not formally. Kowalmistrz (talk) 14:54, 26 June 2012 (UTC)
Picture
editIs there any way we can get a larger picture of him, or even just take the existing picture and crop it so that it's just of him and thus is larger in the infobox?Psunshine87 (talk) 07:49, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
Mentioned in Despatches?
edit'Mentioned in Despatches 1982' would suggest the Falklands War, especially with his experience on HMS Sheffield. But there is no mention of any posting to the Falklands. Possibly it was an award for his command of the patrol boat HMS Cygnet off Northern Ireland in that year, as part of the patrols for IRA gun-runners.
But I think it ought to be clarified. Valetude (talk) 00:26, 17 January 2016 (UTC)
"Palm" in relation to his MiD award is not correct: oak leaf is the British term. Corrected in the table. Had the man been given a French award, "palm" would have applied. See also https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Mentioned_in_dispatches
