How should this list correspond to individual Year in US articles?

I already created the following articles before I was even aware of this list:

• 1838 in the United States

Both have different purposes: While this is a general overview, the specific articles contain more detail. I am wondering now:

1. How can we define the bar for an event to be included here?
2. How should this page link to Year in US articles?
