Add missing major factors
editAdd in Morse code invention and implemenation since it is based on assigning the shortest sequence of signals to the most frequently occuring letters.
Likewise, other coding schemes like hollerith for computer punch cards/tape, short hand for dictation and the stenographer's punch machine coding. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.155.35.130 (talk) 20:28, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Expansion tag
editAlthough the timeline has quite a lot on advances in error-correcting codes, to me it seems at the moment it could particularly do with
- rather more material on data compression.
- more of the important foundational results of information theory.
- some of the milestone events in the first use of compression and forward error correction that really put the subject on the popular map -- eg the first use of error-correcting codes for deep-space satellite communication; implications for error correction in the start of the modem industry; perhaps the launch of the first compact disk... etc
For this reason I'm tagging the page as "could do with expansion". -- Jheald 09:14, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
Wavelet compression should be mentioned. Jrvz 12:45, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- Why? It has little to do with information theory. Dicklyon 15:32, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
- I have added as a green bullet the invention of the Sardinas-Patterson algorithm in 1953; there are many universities where this is taught in beginner level courses on coding theory/information theory (but also many where this is not the case). Hermel (talk) 23:12, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
Asymmetric numeral systems entropy coding is used in recent data compressors instead of Huffman or arithmetic - maybe it is worth adding? 188.146.130.136 (talk) 15:25, 30 October 2018 (UTC)
Missing modern Channel Capacity inventions
editIn particularly, optical fiber and The Development of a http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/ViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/I01196X/1 should be added as they pertain directly to Channel capacity. I would do it, but I have had no past editing this page and I don't know what the colored dots represent... MrJosiahT (talk) 21:19, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
