More explanation, please

edit

I'm watching a documentary about Aaron Hernandez. I know nothing about American football, so I came to this article for an explanation of what a tight end does, and after reading this article, I'm none the wiser. Is it possible to describe what a tight end actually does (without saying it's a hybrid of two other roles), please?

Do we need the link to the plumbing? They're different meanings, yes? 128.194.66.33 20:51, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

"three tight ends"

edit

I find "Offensive formations may have as few as zero or as many as three tight ends at one time." Obviously, we can't have 3 (offensive) ends on one play. Maybe have 2 actual tight ends, and a back approximating that position by positioning himself just outside of a tight end AND one step back of the linemen to satisfy the requirement of being in the backfield? We could have 4 players doing this (2 as tight ends and 2, as just described, in nearby backfield), and this is done (right?) for attempt at either field goal or kicked extra point; this leaves 2 others to be positioned in backfield. When in motion?

edit

I have heard of Kellen Winslow, but am not as familiar with stuff like this quote from this wikipedia article: "Winslow was put in motion to avoid being jammed at the line, lined up wide, or in the slot against ..." This needs some clarification, because an end cannot be in motion at time of snap (doing do would lead to a motion penalty). Carlm0404 (talk) 20:51, 19 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Wasn't the end originally a tight end?

edit

Wikipedia has article about split end (wide receiver), with what had been the new idea of placing an end out toward the sideline and away from other linemen. So, the end up to then was always positioned as what we now call tight end? I find, in this wikipedia article, "The advent of the tight end position is closely tied to the decline of the one-platoon system during the 1940s and '50s." -- maybe just the term "tight end"?
