Discussion

How about some examples of good vs. bad thesis statements?.?.?

This entry conflates thesis statement with a thesis (like masters thesis). The two are distinct. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ps07swt (talkcontribs) 21:17, 13 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

I agree. I boldly removed those sections, and wrote more about actual thesis. If someone wants to create a new page about essay structures, which might include a summary of the Five paragraph essay page, the snapshot from before the removal is here. I am going to add some examples now.--Theredproject (talk) 02:05, 6 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Should there a disambiguation link for "thesis" alone as an entire paper, such as master's/doctoral thesis? Flight Risk (talk) 12:35, 16 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

More info?

edit

This stub doesn't do much to describe how to form a thesis or how to turn it into an essay, nor does it discuss whether it is essential in academic writing. For example, must an essay always contain a thesis statement, or does it depend on the style of the author and the type of essay?

Don't change a thing! It's perfect just the way it is.

Um, it was a pile of chaos. I've replaced it with what I hope is a more coherent summary of the first link (which appears to be the source for what was there before) and have given some more links. Perhaps an example would make this clearer - maybe someone can choose one from the links. Oh, and signing your discussion posts is much appreciated. Now, categories anyone? --WiseWoman 20:06, 3 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think a separate section would be needed if we were to discuss how to turn it into an essay. Andrewshousha —Preceding undated comment added 04:35, 24 October 2010 (UTC).Reply

A category about the various types of thesis statements would be helpful (i.e. analytical, expository, argumentative). Perhaps use this as a reference for writing one. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/545/01/ --FaultPicker (talk) 18:13, 31 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

In all types of scientific writing?

edit

any support for this? the external links provided refer to arguements or persuasive writing, which usually are not present in natural science papers. Sato au (talk) 12:31, 15 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thesis statements aren't only for science papers, but for many other subjects Andrewshousha (talk) 04:37, 24 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Comparison essays?

edit

What about comparison essays? How are we supposed to use the information in the article to create a thesis statement for a similarities and differences type essay? There is no argument, nothing to prove. There needs to be more information about different types of essays and how to change the thesis statement appropriately. --RG104 (talk) 02:00, 16 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
