Restructuring the article

edit

I have added a new section on the important feature of e-Links and Internet Breakout. (MihalOrela (talk) 11:26, 5 August 2008 (UTC))Reply

I have added the table of contents of the book itself. I think this helps to give some idea of subject matter without wishing to endorse the book (which I am strongly tempted to do); I have read the book, of course, and it is used on a University course that I give in Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. (MihalOrela (talk) 13:16, 5 August 2008 (UTC))Reply

I have added a new section on The Challenges of the Network Society. In particular, I considered it important enough to quote the last paragraph of the book. In some sense this really sums up the key sociological issue that Castells addresses. (MihalOrela (talk) 13:22, 5 August 2008 (UTC))Reply

Contents

edit

The existing section on the "Table of Contents" can be autogenerated from section headings, each of which is a Chapter heading. Such a device exhibits automatically the structure of the book. I will do this now. --Михал Орела (talk) 11:44, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have added in an Internet Map (from Commons) which captures something of the spirit of the cover of Castell's book.

Now I propose to take a small quotation from each chapter and to blockquote it under each section heading. Such a text gives insight into content. The device also permits the addition of Notes on the chapter in question. --Михал Орела (talk) 12:04, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Bracketting other author's original contributionm

edit

I have bracketted the original author's contribution with a section heading entitled "Some key observations". I have not yet "massaged" the English text. I have also added in explicit citations to the 2001 edition of the book. (MihalOrela (talk) 10:42, 6 August 2008 (UTC))Reply

New section entitle cultural heritage

edit

The name and rationale of the Internet Galaxy ought to be elaborated. The name is striking and clearly is derived from the Gutenberg Galaxy (Need a direct citation). Although the structure of the two books is different there is a definite strong cultural link between the two. This ought to be explained in some detail (short paragraph or two). (MihalOrela (talk) 04:56, 7 August 2008 (UTC))Reply

I just added the text

We shall be interested to see in what way the McLuhan message/massage is carried through into the Castells' book. This will not be an easy task. In fact it might be nearly impossible. Very few will have read McLuhan's book in its entirety. And of those who have, will they now read Castell's book and compare?

If we are to take on this task in our course, how might we start? And then how might we go on?

and then deleted it. It was too familiar. Still the idea to expand on this in some way is important. (Михал Орела 16:22, 20 August 2008 (UTC))

Work needs to be done

edit

I see that “The Internet Galaxy” book article needs a great deal of attention. I have included an external reference which gives a good account of the contents of the book: StudyPlace wiki --Михал Орела (talk) 10:58, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Chapter headings with characteristic quotations

edit

I have now filled out a complete skeleton structure of the book. Perhaps others might might fill in some textual details at their convenience :) --Михал Орела (talk) 19:03, 11 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Reverting to an earlier edit

edit

Someone has undone about 2 weeks of editing and not signed. I have reverted to the original.

In addition I have removed the image from the Book Infobox on the recommendation of Wednesday Next —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mihal Orela (talkcontribs) 07:38, 16 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have now converted all the external Wikipedia links to internal Wikipedia links as recommended by Wednesday Next. The text looks much better. --Михал Орела (talk) 12:29, 16 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Primary Sources

edit

Currently the primary source (i.e., the Book itself) is only used to guide. Secondary sources of a certain quality are not easy to come by. Help is requested (and will be appreciated). --Михал Орела (talk) 08:06, 16 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

To address the comment on the "orphan quality" of the article I have added some relevant internal links from

I will look to see what other possibilities there are to get the article out of the "Wikipedia Orphanage". Михал Орела (talk) 11:34, 20 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Social Informatics?

I´m doing Castells since 2005 and Internet research round about 2010. I have never heared about social informatics. So please check the reference. It doesn´t look reliable at all. And this book is not an introduction into something other than the internet. It is one of Manuel Castells books that mark the sociological state of research about the internet. If you like you can call internet sociology or something similar but not informaticsP. Adamik (talk) 15:08, 26 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
