Wondering how to edit this U.S. City Entry?
The WikiProject U.S. Cities standards might help.
Notable residents
editIt is unlikely any of the "Notable residents" would pass muster with Wikipedia policies. I will not remove them because of the likely firestorm that would result and because it might appear a personal bias since I live in Talkeetna and know all of those people. But none of the people listed are notable outside the local community and a great many more people are notable by the same criteria within the community. In addition, the list invites vandalism as evidenced at least once in the page history. Jimkloss (talk) 17:11, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
I agree with this dude, with perhaps the exception of Cartwright. Talkeetnans are pretty full of themselves, no offense. 216.67.49.12 (talk) 01:55, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
Request for admin help
editI am not a Wikipedia policy expert. I would like someone who is to consider deleting the Notable residents portion of this page. Reasons to delete include:
- It is attracting juvenile vandalism and I believe will continue to do so.
- It is heavily based in POV.
- I live in Talkeetna, know most of the people listed, and don't believe any of them are notable in terms of how Wikipedia defines notability (little or no 3rd source verification).
- It does not provide any useful encyclopedic content about the town of Talkeetna itself.
- Other articles about similar towns/cities (Hope,_Alaska) do not contain a Notable Residents section.
If no admin responds and/or there is no discussion/concurrence on this page, I will remove the section myself but I'd prefer discussion before I take that step. Thanks. Jimkloss (talk) 18:56, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
- I am going to remove the Notable Residents section per Wikipedia:Notability_(people) Jimkloss (talk) 05:05, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
Co-ordinates
editDaft question but does the article need the location co-ordinates mentioned four times! MilborneOne (talk) 09:34, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
- Probably not but it looks like they are templates that may be categorized and since I'm no "small towns" layout editor, I'm leaving them alone. Thanks for removing the external RSS link I put in and any other cleanup to meet standards. I'm not sure when to cite with a ref, when to link to an external site in the text and when to put a link in "External links" but my general goal is to cut down on the promotional stuff and create more encyclopedic links/references. jimkloss (talk) 17:56, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
- No problem, normally if you use an external site as a reference it doesnt need repeating in the external links section. Just have to keep an eye on external links that they add value to the article and not used as a webdirectory (or promotion/advertising). You really need to add a reference for facts, information and opinions so other editors can see it. If they dont have a reference they could be challenged and removed in the future. But dont really worry about it, somebody wil always come along to sort it out in time! MilborneOne (talk) 18:07, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
In Film
editSnow Dogs was based in one, "Tolketna, AK" which is nearly identical to Talkeetna, AK. The only differences present could be for comedic effect. I'm not posting this on the main page due to my lack of sources. If anyone cares to find any, feel free to post something about it.
As a former resident, I remember hearing that there was a crew scouting the area during the making of Snow Dogs, well before anyone knew what it was about. This could have just been small-town rumors, but I bet there is truth in it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.193.57.225 (talk) 22:30, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
I've confirmed, in Snow Dogs the town is fictional, its relation to Tolkeetna is either comedic, coincidental or unintentional. I have removed the affiliation. Source: imdb.com, Director's Journal: Snow Dogs, Directors Commentary: Snow Dogs
Email Discussion
editI am posting this in case a future problem arises with someone editing this page to promote a commercial entity. I think it helps set a pace and helps informs other editors for this page who may not be aware of general Wikipedia policies. jimkloss (talk) 07:04, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Subject: Talkeetna Page - Wiki
Sorry if I added too much detail about the Pioneer Press. Someone substantially changed my briefer listing to eliminate my distribution area info at about the same time the Talkeetna Good Times listing exploded in length. Didn't mean to cause any trouble...

Hi John,
Thanks for writing and clarifying and for expressing your concern. I will respectfully continue to help fashion the Talkeetna page to meet Wikipedia standards (http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Your_company and http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:NPOV). I will also request outside editorial assistance if an "edit war" ensues because one or more commercial entities is not happy with the article. Wikipedia is not a promotional tool. I'm fairly certain that even without my help, promotional language of any kind will eventually be removed by other editors.
Thanks again for your concern and not wanting to "...cause any trouble...". I assume good faith on your part (http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:Assume_good_faith) and am happy to know you also want the page to reflect fairly and equally on all the media resources available in the Talkeetna area.

"Mayor Title"
editNPR California reported today that the "write in" aspect of the cat becoming mayor is actually false, as there are no elected officials for the town. Can I get some clarification please, as this article lists that the "write in" classification as to how the cat was elected honorary mayor is true.[1]
___
According to the article:
Government
• Mayor Stubbs (1997 - present)
There is no local government in Talkeetna. The cat isn't a real mayor; it's an honorary mayor. Talkeetna doesn't have a mayor or a city council.
Note on Stubbs' injury date--Metro Canada (online) indicates that Stubbs was injured on Saturday, Aug. 31, and not Wednesday, Sept 4.--David Westling — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.131.59.140 (talk) 20:52, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

"Mayor Title and Dog Attack, Other Edits"
editI don't think this dog attack is necessarily relevant, and the original language was hacked up pretty bad with recent edits. I'd suggest a revert. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.120.124.50 (talk) 05:47, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
Susitna Dam
editThe Susitna Dam project is worth its own page, but I'm not sure that the section, as written, is relevant to this page. Thoughts? Name Omitted (talk) 15:54, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Government
editAs Vern Halter's term of office ended in 2015 I've replaced "which is represented by Assembly Member Vern Halter, who succeeded borough mayor Larry DeVilbiss" with "which is represented by an elected member in the Borough Assembly". Maybe a list similar to "The following individuals have represented Talkeetna in the Alaska Legislature since statehood" should be added for Matanuska Susitna Borough Assembly.
