"Pizzeria menus often include eggplant parmigiana, chicken parmigiana, and meatball heros, each served with tomato sauce. "

This is a picture of a meatball hero and I don't understand why its being taken down. It's a fine, clear, illustration of what one is. Stop needlessly reverting it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Drunkboxer (talkcontribs) 18:04, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

If that's what it were a picture of, I wouldn't have removed it. The picture I removed (this one) is not at all a typical "meatball hero" and therefore not a suitable choice for the only image in this article. As WP:IMAGE states: "Rice is best represented with an image of plain rice, not fried rice". Please don't re-insert that particular image. Thanks. If you don't like why not offer a different one instead of taking down a perfectly suitable image without any attempt to reach a consensus? Bacon is available at every hero/sub/grinder place I've ever been at and I believe this is a typical (though perhaps not prototypical) hero. The rice example is not exactly relevant as this is an article about a type of sandwich, and sandwiches are by their very nature variable and customizable. It's just bacon after all, it's not like it's some bizarre ingredient. I think you're trying to create conflict where an argument isn't needed. Drunkboxer (talk) 18:40, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Your contributions show a history of edit-warring over inappropriate images (such as Truel and Mexican standoff) and a fascination with unusual food combinations. I agree that there's no need for a conflict here, but let's be clear on where the conflict arises. See also Wikipedia:Suspected_sock_puppets/Roboscreech. I'm glad you noticed I like food. But can you please stop trying to get my account deleted? I did stop the edit war on the mexican standoff article when it became clear that I was in the minority opinion. But as far as I can tell, you and me are the only ones disagreeing on this one. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Drunkboxer (talkcontribs) 19:26, 6 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm not trying to get anyone's account "deleted", but I think the sockpuppetry case and the long-running edit wars over other images speak for themselves. The issue at hand is whether one particular image is appropriate for this article. I don't believe it is, for reasons given above. You (and Roboscreech (talk · contribs)) disagree. Rather than edit warring, I'm asking for a third opinion. Thanks. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 01:46, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Third Opinion

edit

If we had an image of a more traditional "hero", it would be preferable to this one per WP:IMAGE. In its absence this image seems perfectly acceptable, especially given the article itself states that "hero"s can have a wide range of ingredients and that the word is sometimes used to describe any long sandwich in the greater New York area (including presumably ones with bacon).

If there is continued opposition to this image perhaps someone could take and upload a photo of a traditional "hero", which would then be able to appear on this page. Euryalus (talk) 02:05, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have found that there is indeed an image of a more traditional hero already available. I will replace the existing one. Thanks for your help. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 02:39, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Very nice. Euryalus (talk) 02:42, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I could accuse you of sockpuppetry, but then again I'm not petty. This is most certainly not a hero sandwich -- clearly you have never had one. That's just a turkey sub or something like that. But that's okay, at least there is some kind of image up, and at least its a sandwich. I wish it was possible to put up an accurate one, but since you seem really anti meatball and bacon (two traditional ingredients that I have gotten on traditional heros in the past) I won't cause anymore drama by trying to correct the article. If you're that determined to put up an inaccurate pic, go ahead. I don't want to bother with it anymore. Roboscreech (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 18:23, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I really don't understand the sockpuppetry comment, but thank you for respecting consensus here. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 22:05, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
There's also no reason you can't have more than one image on a page. The lead image should be the simplest available representation of the article subject (this is the point being made in the plain rice/fried rice example). Subsequent images can show variations on the theme, provided they are relevant to the topic and otherwise follow WP:IMAGE.
A short article might get overwhelmed if there were too many attached images, but how many is too many will depend on the consensus on this talk page. Euryalus (talk) 02:46, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Origin of Name

edit

I've always understood the name "hero" to be a mispronunciation of "gyro", which is itself an incorrect pronunciation of "gyros". Since the sandwiches are similar, at least to people who don't understand gyros meat, I figured at some point the same name was applied to both by American customers who didn't understand the ethnic differences in the two foods. Am I completely off base here? --66.194.217.222 12:43, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Likewise, I have been convinced "hero" comes from "gyro," especially since the Greek word is pronounced much more that way than it is in "gyroscope." My Webster's unabridged says hero sandwiches first started in the early 1950s in the NYC area. This conflicts with the wikipedia entry I just read, of late 19th century. But so far, not a shred of evidenc ethe two are not just a coincidence -- Nicholas222 -- 30 June 2005

Plural?

edit

Heroes or heros? --Closedmouth (talk) 12:13, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

The only plural example for hero sandwich offered in the OED gives 'heros'; however, it's in the same word-entry as all the other uses of hero, so I don't think you could say 'heroes' is wrong. Carl.bunderson (talk) 18:27, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
