why wilaya is translated as state and not as province like for other arab countries? Tobias Conradi 20:02, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

The official government site uses "states", so it is correct. Also English googling returns 8000 hits for "wilaya state" but only 739 for "wilaya province" so "state" appears to be the more widely used translation. - BanyanTree 20:28, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

thx for gov.sd - but why have they done this? BTW even government translations can be uncorrect, my english-googling

I've responded on Talk:Provinces of Mongolia. The same term in another language doesn't have to be translated as the same term in English. -- ran (talk) 21:10, Mar 11, 2005 (UTC)

state border question

edit

Searching around the internet, I have found some contradicting map sources regarding the border between Kassala and Al Qadarif states. Some say Al Fushqa district is entirely within one state or the other and at least one says that it is split between the two. Is there anyone familiar with this matter who can provide first-hand information? --Lasunncty (talk) 10:06, 16 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Darfur states

edit

Hello,

I have added maps for the new states in Darfur as found here on Commons. The maps show all disputes marked; this is done to be neutral. - Thanks, Hoshie 03:43, 6 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Grouping the States

edit

I made a significant structural change, & thought I should explain myself. In an early version of the page, the then-current states were grouped by their correspondence with the larger provinces of British colonial times. Over time, these were groupings were replaced with other historical associations. The most recent version associated collections of states with historical kingdoms of renown. This is a great way to look at Sudanese history. However, given that the focus of this page is on administrative divisions, I don't think it's an appropriate way to organise the information. Furthermore, it was impossible to do accurately as these historical entities were not contemporary, and had a great deal of geographical overlap, nor did they have stable boundaries. I do think it would be entirely appropriate to add a new section explaining which states were within the realms of which historical polities at particular times. I am not currently motivated to do this. Pathawi (talk) 14:57, 20 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
