Science fiction?

edit

Seems more like Science fantasy or sword and planet to me. Serendipodous 10:36, 11 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hmm, I'd rather simply call it "fantasy" myself. I can't seem to find a source to define its genre, the current citations are pretty low quality :s ~Mable (chat) 19:57, 24 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
Near impossible to find excellent citations for genre. Amazon and iTunes seem to be the most common. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 20:16, 24 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
How is the press release low quality? It calls the show an "animated comedy adventure". You'll need to dig up a reviewer's article where they classify it among more specific genres. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 20:29, 24 June 2015 (UTC)Reply
I was just noting how little reviews we sadly have (and believe me, I tried looking for them as well: the show is just too young to have many, I guess), and how half of the sources are just Zap2it pages. There are some pretty good ones, of course, but I wasn't able to find a genre in them... I can't say I had checked them all, though. "Animated comedy adventure" sounds perfectly fine with me, let's go with that :) ~Mable (chat) 07:49, 25 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Episodes 1a/1b or 1/2?

edit

It seems like somekind of edit war is starting here, so let me just ask here: which way should we go? The episodes are paired together, so I would go with the a/b approach myself. Any reason not to? ~Mable (chat) 19:00, 3 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Sources pair the 11 minute segments into single episodes: Zap2it, TVGuide, Amazon, iTunes. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 20:38, 4 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Based on those guides, episode pairing seems to make the most sense, so I don't see a reason to do it any other way. Perhaps if there already exists a consensus against this practice on another series, we'd have something to talk about, or if other sources don't pair the episodes. ~Mable (chat) 21:33, 4 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Pony Head; Character sections

edit

Yes Pony Head was listed on the Disney website on the character's profile, but TBH when it comes to importance and how much the character was relevant in the show, she seems more of a minor/recurring character as she ONLY appeared "Party with a Pony" (1 episode) so far, despite appearing in the show's opening. So personally I think their should be a section where we have the characters listed as "The Main", "Supporting", and "Recurring/Minor" it would have a better understanding on which characters appear more frequently and which ones play a relatively small role.--AnimeDisneylover95 (talk) 20:22, 17 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

It can be split between main and recurring for now. I would exclude minor ones such as King Pony Head, Ludo's minions, the principal, and those who aren't credited by name in the closers. I'm not sure about the ordering: first appearance as major character, alphabetical order, credits order, or by frequency, the last of which would require citations counting all their appearances. Star and Marco's parents appear a lot so they should be near the top for the frequency ordering. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 22:03, 17 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

In order to minimize the guest and one-shot roles, the press release lists "notable guest stars", so those can be put in the episodes themselves. If the character is not credited by name at the end of the episode (as with Janna and Jeremy so far), they can be commented out. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 15:02, 23 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

It seems like none of the sources used in the Recurring characters and Villains sections are secondary and/or reliable. Do we have any reason to list anyone other than the few main characters at all? Are any of the minor characters, such as the protagonists' friends or the villain's underlings, in any way important to the reader's understanding of what the show is about or its relation to the real world? Guest stars are generally worth mentioning, so I do recommend using that function. We have to make sure that all information brought through the prose is interesting for people that technically have no interest in the show itself. If a secondary source writes about any of the show's less prominent characters in a meaningful fashion, please be sure to add that. I have a feeling various sources will talk about Tom when he gets a larger note in the show, but it's hard to say for now. ~Mable (chat) 19:06, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

That's why I was suggesting only the characters mentioned on the fact sheet / press release. Besides Star and Marco's parents, about the only meaningful supporting character is Pony Head and she has had fewer appearances than Ludo's minions. I can trim these to prose paragraphs. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 19:17, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
I suppose adding the parents or even the pony head wouldn't be such a big deal - I am mostly worried about adding a large group of almost faceless and nameless people (which, to the casual viewer, Ludo's minions definitely are). Regardless, however, I'd suggest waiting with talking about minor characters until we actually have something to talk about... ~Mable (chat) 21:19, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Pony Head was listed with Ludo on the main page, so it initially appeared as a notable supporting character. That the episode centering on her was submitted to the festival helps it a bit. The voice actors for the Diaz parents and Ludo/King Butterfly have bios in their Disney XD Press page so cast-wise they're being pushed as notable. The article in general could use more reviews though. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 21:37, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
I think the biggest problem is just that the series is so young. No one has really gotten the time to become invested in the show yet and none of the minor characters have had enough screen time yet. I am sure this will become easier as we get more episodes :) I don't think we should let Disney themselves decide which characters are notable, though. I'm just trying to make sure the article remains as free from fancruft as possible, at least for now, when there's not that much to work with yet. ~Mable (chat) 11:06, 31 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
I agree the number of episodes is too few to determine which of the supporting characters should get their own entry according to secondary sources. Disney press had Skullnick as a regular but she has not been in the show since episode 2. We can keep them in the episode summaries along with the guest characters for now such as with Oskar, Tom, Brittney, Lobster Claws. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 16:31, 31 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Here's the Fact Sheet for the show as released on April 22, 2016: [1] It shows Recurring Voice Cast as Mrs. Diaz, Mr. Diaz, Ferguson, Ponly Head, and Skullnick. I would assume King Butterfly among the recurring as well but Alan Tudyk is listed in Voice Cast along with Eden Sher and Adam McArthur. The press release for season 2 also names these key characters. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 21:04, 11 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Star vs. the Forces of EvilStar vs. The Forces of Evil – the letter T in "the" is uppercased in the logo image, and if we look at the press website linked at the bottom of this article: http://www.disneyabcpress.com/disneyxd/shows/star-vs-the-forces-of-evil/ you can see the uppercased T at the top of the page as well as in the "latest photos" linked at the bottom. Ranze (talk) 17:56, 28 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Observation - DisneyXD, Amazon, Variety, Disney Games, and iTunes, the show creator's website all use lowercase t. However, TheWaltDisneyCompany.com, TVGuide, AV Club, and Deadline use an uppercase T. The ones that use an uppercase T seem to be older sources, however... generally announcements about the upcoming show. I'm leaning toward don't move because of that. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 18:26, 28 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
MOS:CT says to lower case "the" since it isn't at the beginning or end of the title. Logo caps can be ignored as it is stylization. Disney XD Press presents everything in all caps. Disney regular site lower cases both. The "vs." is not clear whether it should be capitalized. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 18:56, 28 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Never seen any sources capitalize "vs." fwiw. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 19:14, 28 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
"Disney XD Press presents everything in all caps." That's just CSS styling, you can copy-paste the text to see the actual casing used. nyuszika7h (talk) 20:34, 28 September 2015 (UTC)Reply
Oppose – The Wikipedia styleguide clearly says that "a", "an" and "the" should be lowercased (unless they are the first or last word of the title). The styleguide should be applied consistently, otherwise it wouldn't make sense to have a styleguide. Darkday (talk) 17:59, 5 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Episode 114

edit

"Mewnipendance Day" and "The Banagic Incident" are listed on the Disney XD press site as Episode 114. So their production code is technically 114 even though it is considered the 11th episode aired and in listings. There are 13 overall episodes in the first season. "Storm the Castle" is the season finale as confirmed by Adam McArthur's Periscope video session he posted on YouTube. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 16:59, 23 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Copyright Office lists them as 1-11, it's the most authorative source we can get. nyuszika7h (talk) 19:25, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I noticed that it lists "Star Comes to Earth / Party with a Pony" as 106/107, but the application title in the detail page for the episode lists it as "1-01", so that takes precedence, especially as the production codes would clash otherwise. This happens with some other shows too. nyuszika7h (talk) 19:28, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I agree about 101 and 111 being the most likely production codes per your lookup. Thanks for checking on those! AngusWOOF (barksniff) 19:37, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Season 2 airdate announced

Airdate for first episode of season two was announced today ([2]), but no word on the name of the first episode. Gonna hold off making the table for season two until we know a title. EvergreenFir (talk) Please {{re}} 01:08, 27 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Storm the Castle ending

edit

Is there any reason why we're leaving out the part that the destruction of Star's wand destroys Ludo's castle and presumably kills Toffee, and then Star banishes Ludo to another dimension? I distinctly remember adding that but it got removed for whatever reason. It's quite a critical part of the episode so it wouldn't count as "overly detailed". It's no different than the section of Game of Thrones Season 4 Episode 2 mentioning Joffrey's death. 50.65.227.24 (talk) 07:45, 31 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

There is no confirmation that Toffee has died. Although Ludo is sent away, he will return for season 2. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 20:59, 11 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Marco's middle name

edit

It's a bit hard to tell, but from the curving of the letters (specifically, how the letter before is connected to the "a"), "Ubaldo" seems more plausible. (screenshot) – nyuszika7h (talk) 08:22, 22 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

I agree it's more likely a Ub instead of a W. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 13:32, 22 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Reason for Semi-Protected Status

edit

What is the reason for the article's semi-protected status? No information is available on this talk page so far as to why it has occurred or why it is still the case. 2402:8200:3207:1800:B9A7:4A4B:F332:AF08 (talk) 01:38, 30 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

It's because some IP editors were trying to reorganize the episodes by segment count instead of leaving it alone as per the consensus on previous talk page sections to use the 1a/1b format. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 02:42, 30 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Supporting characters character notability

edit

I see my edit adding the Magical High Commission to supporting characters has been removed. So far all the characters have appeared in four episodes, one each as a major character. Tom has only appeared in 5 episodes and so far is only a background character. Total number of episodes with a member of the Magical High Commission featured is six. Surely notability also considers to how important they are to the plot? JTdaleTalk~ 15:42, 15 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Tom has been listed in the press releases for the episodes as a recurring character. The question is whether the grouping is notable in secondary sources. Do they appear in the opening credits for the show? Will they have a regular role in the series? They might, given the end of season 2, but need a source to confirm that and not just speculation, unless it's later made obvious like with Janna becoming a regular in season 2. I think the grouping in the style of Ludo's minions is good though so once season 3 confirms they are regulars, it can go right in. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 16:23, 15 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Reception

edit

I think that we need an updated version of reception. If we were to update it, we should have something like this added:

"Star vs. the Forces of Evil was very well received with both critics and audiences, with some calling it the best Disney TV animated show since Gravity Falls. As of April 22, 2017 the show currently holds a rating of 8.2/10 from 3513 users on IMDb.com" For proof on that (for reference purposes), go to IMDb's web page on the series. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jmsfanofcartoons (talkcontribs) 20:22, 16 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Geographical source

edit

In case you're wondering "Who added the new category?" it was me. But only because I looked up the Star vs. The Forces of Evil wiki for Echo Creek and it neighbored Los Angeles. Wikimaster 3 (talk) 03:56, 17 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikis are not reliable sources. Fictional locations might have same names as real locations but that does't mean that is the location. Geraldo Perez (talk) 04:20, 17 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
According to Nefcy's tweet, Echo Creek "is a made up neighborhood based in LA". [3]. But this would have to be placed in the right section such as Setting and referenced before categories can be added for it. It would also help if the Guide book nails down Los Angeles or the episode itself says Los Angeles. Right now the show only has parody names such as Cahooga or Holliwood [4] or the state flag that kind of looks like the California state flag but not really. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 19:14, 17 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
The setting is some fictional place. It is somewhat based on and similar to Los Angeles in California, but that is not the setting, the setting is a fictional location. Like trying to identify where Big Hero 6 is set, Tokyo Japan, San Fransisco California, or some fictional place called San Fransokyo. Or the bigger issue for The Simpsons, where is Springfield. Geraldo Perez (talk) 19:44, 17 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I was going to mention Springfield (The Simpsons) were it not for the tweet. But it has to be a direct reference as with Total Drama Island taking place in Ontario, Canada. The only thing nailed down is that they live in the United States of America. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 19:57, 17 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

BTVA Awards?

edit

I was wondering if the BTVA awards (Behind The Voice Actors awards) are among the awards that are allowed to be placed in the Awards and nominations section since the show has won three People's Choice Awards and was nominated for two other awards from BTVA. Sodaman.12 (talk) 15:23, 28 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

BTVA People's Choice should be regarded as nominations with a footnote that they won the People's Choice as it is a user-voted decision and not a staff decision. Also, only awards for the show and the creator should be listed, not if specific actors won. See Jamie Marchi for example table. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 15:27, 28 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Characters details

edit

The character list is not meant to be comprehensive WP:NOTEVERYTHING:

  • Per WP:TVCAST, please do not add minor characters. They need to be regular and notable recurring characters to have an entry.
  • Use the common name for the character (e.g. Miss Skullnick, Mr. Diaz, King Butterfly, Queen Butterfly, Janna, Dojo Sensei). Do not add last or first or middle names unless notable.
  • Do not add in-universe plot details that don't help the understanding of the character.
  • All details should be supported by reliable sources.

If the cast has expanded significantly, we can consider a separate character article, and then you can put in full names. But please discuss here if that is worth splitting. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 22:41, 18 November 2017 (UTC) updated 23:25, 18 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

I've decided to split off the characters list. Each of the characters gets significant coverage in the guide book and more of them are getting recurring appearances in the show. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 14:45, 19 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
