This ungrammatical, improperly punctuated passage, rife with random capitalization, is from the intro. The editor who contributed it is making a career of dubious contributions like this one.
However according to rearcher Mircea Eliade in his book Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy; Some Shamans actually believe these spirits exist outside of their dreams. and help them in all things including getting in touch with spirit helpers etc. such as among the ayami (pages 72-73, 79-80,84)
