Crystal Quest
editSomeone on /. says that the sosumi sound was lifted from the Crystal Quest game.
<http://apple.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=143415&cid=12020084>
Can anyone fact check this ?
- Well, there's nowhere else on the Internet where anyone's claiming that. I'll be looking into it in more detail soon. --Carnildo 19:12, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)
"Early Apple sound designer Jim Reekes corrects Sosumi myth". March 24, 2005. Archived from the original on 2011-07-09.:
Jim adds, "Funny, it may actually be true. The sosumi beep may have originally came from Crystal Quest!" So, it's true, sosumi was indeed lifted from crystal quest.
- "May have". Doesn't mean yes, doesn't mean no. The exact quote from the Slashdot thread is "Well, I'm responsible for Sosumi, the System 7 beeps, and the startup sound (which all remain in use today). I don't actually remember where or how I obtained the original sound." Any claims that it was stolen from Crystal Quest are simply unverifiable rumors. --Carnildo 23:39, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I doubt that the Sosumi sound came from Crystal Quest. As far as I remember Crystal Quest, it's a game that came to the Mac relatively late - at least after these system sounds were added. --TorbenGB 28 July 2005
What about "wild eep"? Does it have a story, too?
- I doubt it. It seems to me like it's just a wild eep. --Carnildo 03:56, 27 July 2005 (UTC)
Eep has a story but it's not as interesting as Sosumi. Regardless, I feel it's worth being part of an article on Wikipedia. Some people don't, however. :/ Eep² 13:36, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Japanese?
editWhat is the Japanese character/word "sosumi," as referenced in the article? I'm assuming there isn't one, so that should be mentioned.
- There isn't one, but it makes a convienient fiction to get a lawyer off one's back. --Carnildo 19:59, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
- Well, if you check http://www.omniglot.com/writing/japanese_hiragana.htm You can figure out the exact characters. My computer doesn't have the Japanese IME right now, but tomorrow when I get on a iMac at school I might try to translate the romaji into hiragana, unless somebody else can do it before 8:30 am ADT. --Ampersand2006 ( & ) 00:24, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- Here it is: 祖すみ at least I think that's it... --Ampersand2006 ( & ) 11:31, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
- It doesn't really mean anything in Japanese. You'd be best off using katakana: ソスミ. The hiragana is そすみ. The 祖 character you mentioned before is a kanji that's pronounced as "so", but it doesn't really make sense to use it here. 195.241.69.171 (talk) 19:02, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Firmware?
editHowdy. Wikipedia noob here! Why is this article in the category Macintosh Firmware? I mean, I don't believe Sosumi, which is a sound file, has anything to do with firmware... SkiSkywalker 04:37, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
Sosumi is not a startup chime
editHowdy! Seasoned Wikipedia fan here. I just wanted to explain why I re-removed the mention of Wall-E from the article.
Sosumi is one of several alert sounds that came with System 7, for when the software needed to alert you. In contrast, the startup chime featured in Wall-E is one of several sounds that have been embedded in Mac firmware over the years, to be played early in the startup process. Sosumi is not a startup chime. The cited interview with Jim Reekes covers both sounds; it does not say that Sosumi was used in Wall-E. ⫷ SkiSkywalker ⫸ (talk) 18:54, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
Sonumi
editThe article mentions that the sound was going to be renamed but the name was left intact for Big Sur. I can't verify this, because as of 11.2.3 (20D91) it's called Sonumi. I'm not sure if I should remove the claim or if the change was made later. --Steven Fisher (talk) 23:06, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
- It is called Sonumi for me in Sonoma 14.3 (I would think it was a fun change related to the name Sonoma, but it looks like change was before Sonoma). 66.41.121.142 (talk) 16:24, 25 September 2024 (UTC)
Sosumi as a sound itself
editI assume the sound hasn't changed since release until Big Sur. I was thinking about making a fair use file of the Sosumi file from OS X Mavericks. Is it worth a fair use usage? Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 05:47, 3 October 2023 (UTC)
